It's a US number one from the same decade as the Coasters' Yakety Yak, so no... :)

That's the 50s? When was Stay released?

1960.

Ok, time for a clue. This group was the first to get two number ones in the Hot 100 in a calendar year.

Both 1960s.

This group did not have a hit after 1963. They were on the same label as The Ventures. They were covered by Frankie Vaughan and the Kaye Sisters in the UK, but still had the hit over here.
I'll give it until midnight then think of another one.

I'll admit to Googling the answer and I'll be surprised if anybody gets it. I've never knowingly heard the record or even the artist.

That's pretty much how I felt about all the other questions until the one I managed to answer :) . Did you listen to the track once you identified it – Thang-y had never heard of it, but recognized it immediately when I played it to her?

Incidentally, I tried the same question on the imdb music boards about ten years ago and it was solved in about three minutes - admittedly by an American who was born in the 1940s...

Fleetwoods - Come Softly To Me

Other#1 was Mr. Blue from 1959

Who killed Davey Moore (or Bambi)?

Yep, group recorded a demo of their own song a capella with the shaking keys, sent it to a local label; label boss Bonnie Guitar overdubbed on the demo, million-seller. Title changed from simply 'Come Softly' because US, 1950s, reasons.

Anyway, back to the pig's question...

haven't got a clue.

I asked him and yes I know the song, I've heard it. But I couldn't have guessed it.

At least one more clue needed I think.

As is the song that you named, if it was a hit in 1960. The "1960s" as a historical era ran from 1960-69. Your chronometrical pedantry is misplaced here!

'Who Killed Davey Moore' is a Dylan song, 'Who Killed Bambi' is Tenpole Tudor... not sure that the answer would be the same to both though!
