This may very well be the first and final time I ever type the name "Community Trolls"...

That's the one! I even found a song on YouTube when I was confirming my recollection of reading that big REM bio years ago...

You'll never believe me, but there was an entirely separate conversation in an entirely separate place that lead me to "Hang on - this is starting to look a hell of a lot like the active question on the BCB quiz."

Paul McCartney 's contributions to WHAT successful record were left on the cutting room floor?

I believe you, Bent -
these things are so odd sometimes. My last refuge usually is (when I discarded covers, instruments, religion, drugs, lovers, weird preferences, and all other possible links): geography (which opens up many different perspectives, in fact). I didn't know where on earth Matthew Sweet grew as musician at all, might have been Hong Kong, Australia. Tierra del Fuego, or Bhutan...
...but R.E.M. always has been coupled to: Athens, Ga. So often, that I placed my bet on this one.
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

The Dark Side Of The Moon
He and Linda were among those interviewed by Roger Waters about violence and money and so on (for the talky bits).

This just has to be right. In Dutch: "ik voel dat aan mijn water", which roughly translates as: "I feel that through my pee".

Frank, wasn't there a question you wanted to do? If so, I'll yield my time to you. If not, I'll try to come up with something.

How nice that you recalled this one, very courteous!
Here it is, and it looks more complex than it actually is:
I need the link between Adam Sandler, Bluto, The Shining, The Two Jakes, and Inara George...
...now!

Is that Bluto, the Popeye character, or Bluto, the Animal House character?

Which is a very good one, congrats!
Oh, Bluto is the Popeye character.
Adam Sandler acted in Punch-Drunk Love, and Jon Brion's soundtrack featured "He Needs Me" from the soundtrack of the movie Popeye (by Robert Altman). Van Dyke Parks arranged the music of that particular movie; this song become something of a sleeper hit in several countries, Holland was one.
Shelley Duvall appeared in Popeye and in The Shining. She sang "He Needs Me".
Van Dyke Parks had a cameo in The Two Jakes, as a lawyer. Jack Nicholson, of course, is in The Shining and in The Two Jakes.
Inara George is the daughter of Lowell George. Van Dyke Parks was close to Lowell throughout his adult life as a musician. He composed and orchestrated "Cheek To Cheek" on George's Thanks I'll Eat It Here (quite a hit in Holland). Van Dyke arranged Inara George's An Invitation (2008). The two did a world tour not long after that, I saw them with a big string orchestra in The Hague (wonderful show), and I chatted half an hour or so with them backstage. For Inara, Parks has been a wonderful friend in her youth (he was a house friend of Lowell's), and she recalled how he had helped her after the tragic death of her dad.
OK, many lovely links here, don't you agree?

To be fair your BBs obsession was a good place to start. Plus I think I'm the other person on BCB to own the Inara George album!

Ok. Link Tim Buckley to Chow Hsuan ("the Golden Voice" of Chinese pop in the post war period), please. A couple of steps are involved.

Good thinking, Inspector Dalziel!
(I did have a Plan B: if my question would have stood for too long, I'd have directed people to my avatar - someone's in there, a relevant person...)
