Gotta go with "TSRTS"! "Achilles" is second.

They were masters of this, weren't they. As much as I like the Immigrant Song, I think Black Dog leading into Rock and Roll is the best.

It's bold, it's strong. I'm not a huge fan of the album as a whole but that's one fuck of a way to start.

'Immigrant Song' is pretty good too. It's spooked. I remember the first time I heard it - 'so THIS is Led Zeppelin?!?'. I'd expected something like Robert Cray or some shit

It’d be my second choice (it’s a fine overture though), first would be the elasticity of Immigrant Song.

Then TSRTS (into Rain Song would be the best 1-2), WLL, Custard Pie (a groovy goof),Achilles (shrill and overlong), Black Dog (meh, Rock and Roll should’ve opened) and I don’t recall In The Evening.

well Good Times Bad Times ran Song Remains The Same a close second for my vote

Who knows? I might switch

Meantime, curious to see Whole Lotta Love with no votes (early days, tho - still all to play for)

Whole Lotta Love kinda sux.
The others are almost uniformly great as album openers.

It made me laugh the first time I heard it. Long moody build up with synthetic strings, then suddenly Percy's ridiculous bellow - 'IN THE EEEEEEEEEEVE-NING', and then they all pile in, Bonzo playing half a beat behind everyone else. It's fun for a minute.

Ignoring the text spelling influence in your writing, I would think it's regarded by most as a classic riff and you're just being contrary.

I think WLL is superb. But Zep were masters of the opening song. Very hard to chose, but I went for Good times Bad Times, as it is such a strong statement of intent. Immigrant song next, but is a tough list right down to the end. Excusing the risible in the evening, of course...

Custard Pie please. Second choice would be In The Evening. Both because they seem to cue up their respective albums without overshadowing them.
