Unlikeable cunts too.

One of the worst bands to make it big in the rock era. They left a foul smell too.

Ridiculous fuckers.

That first album of theirs has a particular something, that was the right thing for 1988. It took the fluffiness out of commercial hard rock. It's not my usual cup of tea, but I concede it is a well made and potent one.

Or, was at the start. The more famous they got, the less I liked them, unlike Nirvana, Slayer and Metallica. Some people tell me Use Your Illusion is far superior to Appetite, I've never listened to enough of it to make that decision.

I do own Appetite though, and I can imagine a day when I would put it on for enjoyment.

I never saw them live and have no interest in doing so now. However, I did once see Duff McKagan at a Whole Foods, and I recognized him but didn't remember from where. I figured he was someone I knew, so I waved and said "Hey!" and he said "Hey!" back to me.

I like the first record quite a bit. They did lose me with the Illusion albums (though I'm sure there is one pretty good record between them though I haven't felt much like listening to them since the first time).

I have a very warm spot for their much maligned cover record.

MTV delivered them into millions of living rooms and it was just what youngsters who had heads in need of banging needed.
I'm all for people who need to bang their heads to have something to bang it along to but I never warmed to them in the least.
it's a tight band and they do rock, that's usually enough for me. that singer made my bullshit detector go up to 11. I find him unpleasant in each and every way. I hope all the youngsters who climbed on buses to move to Hollywood ended up sleeping in his parking lot.

I remember well the very first time I heard "Welcome To The Jungle" at the Rolling Stone (the world's greatest bar) and that grindy, ass clenching shit hit me hard. I also liked the double album, all of it. "Get In the Ring" is a killer.

There’s plenty to like. Plenty to dislike. But many of the best songs are ‘deep’ eg ‘Prostitute’ off the Democracy album.
‘Estranged’ is awesome. But the video isn’t.
‘Coma’ is epic. Lots from Appetite... are era-defining.

When I was at the newspaper, I used to monitor all the local throwaways (much smaller than the LA Weekly. fanzines, really) in lieu of actually going out more than 5-6 nights a week. The name Guns 'n' Roses kept showing up, favorably, though they weren't noticed by any of the larger papers. When they signed -- still no press to speak of -- I requested an interview. The problem, I told the publicist, was that in the interviews I'd read, they (mainly Axl) seemed barely literate, whether in reality or just image-making. And they couldn't get through a sentence without using language I couldn't run in a mainstream newspaper (I detested using "expletive deleted" or any other such cuteness). She set me up with Duff, who was great. I never did see them live, and they did fine without me.

I love Use Your Illusions and actually much prefer it to the tighter, more fucused Appetite.

That said my favourite of their songs is Think About You which doesn't seem particularly highly regarded by anyone else.
I can just about handle you driving like a pissed up crackhead and treating women like beanbags but I'm gonna say this once and once only Gene, stay out of Camberwick Green!

In reference to DDs "voices that made you stop thread", I distinctly remember hearing Axl's voice for the first time and it quite literally did stop me in my tracks but for all the wrong reasons - i was appalled that someone could sing as annoyingly as this.

BUT, they definitely did (eventually) win me over.
