Re: Jimi Hendrix
Graham Nash had a Sirius XM "Town Hall". He said (among other things) that Hendrix liked to play the board game "Risk" while on acid.

songsforbeginners wrote:“Jimi would play Risk on acid, and I never — and me personally — ever beat him at all,” Nash said. “He was unbelievable at it. He was a military man, you know, he’s a paratrooper, and I don’t know whether you know that about Jimi, but no one ever beat him at Risk.”

I've come around to him again in a big way lately. I never think he's the best guitarist in the world or anything like that -- those thoughts don't enter my head -- he's just him. A great talent letting it out in his particular way.

Re: Jimi Hendrix
I binge a lot on Post Ladyland stuff. I used to think it was because I was overfamiliar with E L and before. As it turns out, the “rainbow bridge” and “cry of love” type tracks are a side of Hendrix that I really enjoy. Lots of punchy songs with pretty clean, straightforward arrangements.
Lots of people said he was sick of playing some of his older songs. I won’t say I love these “newer” songs as much but they are good, solid Hendrix tunes with clean leads and his swell vocals. I doubt this new batch of songs would have kept people from yelling for the old ones butI’m sure glad to have them.
“Astro Man” for example, is really nothing special yet, when I’m in the mood for Hendrix, it really hits the spot.

Re: Jimi Hendrix
I listen to Rainbow Bridge a lot. It's sort of like pure Hendrix in the sense that it's him unburdened by greatness, sort of the way that Dark Horse is more George Harrisonesque than ATMP.

Re: Jimi Hendrix
I think that had The Band of Gypsies evolved from essentially a jamming band into a cohesive unit they would have delivered some stunning material.
And I still think "Machine Gun" from said album is the most powerful other worldly electric guitar performance yet performed or recorded.

YES - I often think that.
And although there are tracks where he flashes a bit, many of his best songs ('Hey Joe', 'Crosstown Traffic', 'The Burning of the Midnight Lamp', 'Purple Haze') are relatively concise and don't feature a great deal of solo-ing. They're powerful, musical, unique.
He really was incredible, and I still find it surprising that he didn't think much of his own voice (the image I have is him shrugging his shoulders as he's guided towards a mike, saying 'well, if Dylan can get away with it...' - something I read somewhere, I think). He sounds as cool as it's possible for a vocalist to get!

For those three Experience albums, he was as far ahead of his contemporaries as any artist in contemporary music has ever ever been.

He changed the way we think about what a guitar can sound like.
And he wrote some good tunes.
