What seemed like a great, nervy band in early singles morphed into a good rhythm section, a Modern Lover draftee and an Enoesque twerp without a sense of humour up front. Tom Tom club turned out better in the end

So much better than the casual listener realises , essential. Tom tom were just a flip art dayglo coloured series of squiggles.

Loved them at the time, never play them now. Bit like Costello in that regard, I guess.

Still sounds good though, when the odd song comes on the iPod.

I wouldn't say he didn't have a sense of humour, perhaps a skewered and sometimes irritating one, but a sense of humour just the same.

I'd take Wordy Rappinghood over anything on Life in the Bush of Ghosts.

But Life in the Bush isn't a Talking Heads album.

That guy was a really good drummer.

Personally, I think they took a wrong turn with all that Remain in Light/expanded lineup/Adrian Belew stuff.

Er, no. sorry about the ambiguity, but when I wrote 'in the end' back up there a ways, I meant, after the band ended, I liked what Chris and Tina did better than what DB did, which made me think higher of their contribution to TH's overall sound in retrospect.. I could have worded it better :) :)

Yes, but Ray, even there your logic is faulty. The best Tom Tom album is Genius of Love - which is 1981. Which is not after the band ended. Come to think of it - that's the year of Life in the Bush of Ghosts too.

Wise words.

They did it quite well - if it was an exercise in precision and ambition - but by fuck it's a chore to listen to.

You only need to listen to the opening few bars of 'Heaven' to be awed - and they left it all behind.

Not so much my logic as my chronology :) . I stand by my point that WR is better than anything on Bush of Ghosts. As for TH albums, I was disappointed by RiL, and stopped listening after that, which was in 1980 (I looked it up). and then various members of the band did their own thing, so I guess I assumed they had split
I chose that song because I thought at the time that it was a message to Byrne, the band's lyricist and spokesman...

I'm playing them more & more these days since working on the CBGB project. I dig it all, pretty much, up to Little Creatures. The African inspired funk jams were great! They really didn't have two albums that sound alike, almost insistent about progressing.

Although I like Adrian Belew less and less as the years go by, he's not really a big part of it.

I would add that anyone who thinks Byrne has no sense of humor should go back and listen to "Animals" and "The Big Country." Hilarious!

That's the way I felt about it at the time. There's a noticeable drop off in quality after 1985. Not that True Lies and Naked are weak, necessarily, just that they aren't as good as what came before.

This is the part directed at Byrne, especially as Weymouth mimics his style of singing

**1/2 on the TCE scale. Worthy of further investigation. I only have Stop Making Sense which I like but never investigated further. The fact that Remains In Light seems to divide opinion so much suggests should I give that one a go.
