I like it. Maybe not as good as the next two, but certainly potential for growth. As with all of these early efforts though, weird mixes to some of the songs. The last one, for instance. Gabriel's vocals seem buried. It should all be louder and everything should sound crystal-clear.

Strange how we perceive things different when listen to records.
I have no problem what so ever with the sound.
Somehow it comes down to which edition you are listening to.

I prefer the Virgin/Charisma CASCD 1052
You need to crank it up, then its full with dynamics and clarity.
Sure enough some people will tell you the opposite...
(victims of the loudness war, old age, or their hearing are damage) ;)

I dunno, "The Musical Box" sounds great, but then you get to "The Fountain of Salmacis" and the sound is different. I'll have to play it again.

I read this thread first thing this morning while making the tea. In the spirit of revisiting things with an open mind, when I got to work, I sat at my desk and dialed up Selling England By The Pound while I went through emails.

I made it three minutes and seventeen seconds. What dreadful music. Just appalling. There may be popular music I like even less, but it doesn’t occur to me now. Until next time ...

That's three minutes longer than I made it

3.19 is the best bit!

Dancing with the Moonlight Knight is them doing the Mahavishnu thing. Tedious.

Something like Cinema Show is much better but that album is incredibly patchy.

It's not the disc. It's the dynamics they chose when it was recorded.

Nah!
Have you listened to the version I suggested?
The def edition rem suffers from noise reduction
Not sure that is the reason you hear what you hear
More down to personal taste....

I saw Genesis for the first time just a few days before this was recorded for the BBC in London.

I remember being awestruck at this one:

Conny O. is probably right about preference. I jumped out of my shoes and socks when I heard that remaster but that's probably because I tend to lean on my favorite tracks - Musical Box & Giant Hogweed primarily. I like the album as a whole ( in fact - more than ever) but I think those two tracks are great, rollicking things and that the remaster gives it an extra punch that I never experienced back in my vinyl days.

Highly recommended if you can find it, is the sumptuous book, I Know What I Like, by Armando Gallo.

Prices vary on eBay, but if you can pick up a good condition one for £20, I’d say go for it.
