But if it's going to be 'covers', there's got to be rules. I know nobody cares any more that the phrase 'cover version' used to mean something released at the same time as 'the original' (which it wasn't always) in an attempt to get a slice of the action, and now takes in revivals, versions, album tracks, etc.
So are we saying this cup is open to any recording of a composition previously recorded (or released?) by someone else? Because that means a hell of a huge field, and 'short' lists yards long, and lots of squabbling (which I know is a BCB staple, but seriously..).
Other possibilities is to limit the 'covers' to a particular genre, or decade, of 'originals' or 'covers'. On the whole, I would prefer the Nineties because of this, so I did change my mind and vote.

Also, are we meant to judge them as covers, i.e. in the context of the recording covered (in which case the original needs to be pointed out for no-nothings such as I), or as records in their own right?

Oh man, you're giving me a headache.

90's Cup it is!

A cover has to be judged in the context of the original, or best known versions, surely. Otherwise Quiet Riot's Slade cover would be acceptable, and there is no known universe in which that is so.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Covers of 90s songs?
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Yep, that knocks out the strongest competition, i.e. me.

But it does mean we're going to have to put up two videos, the cover and what it's covering, because you can't assume that I, in particular, will be familiar with the original or 'best-known'.

That may be a moot point.
What the hell happened?

It was 13-4 in favor of the Covers Cup 24 hours ago?

The one thing that a 90s Cup will lack will be me teeing off deluxe about THAT FUCKING SONG

Aliases?
Not guilty, btw – and of course the 12/13 for covers may also have involved them.
Or it could just be a few non-voters like me have had a change of heart.

I'm only joking, Ray. 90's covers? I wouldn't know where to start.

So do we run two Cups now?
Or perhaps do a round of 90s and a second round of covers?

Covers had 13 votes but now 11?

Jeez even with a poll it's hard to figure out.
