Madonna album poll
It was her birthday the other day. She's almost 60. How can that be?
Anyway, she's known for her singles more than her albums and rightly so but she had made some cracking albums. Perhaps not Great, there's usually one or two duffers but still....
Pick three.

It's funny, but I don't think I've ever listened to a Madonna album.

Same here. I think she made a couple of catchy pop hits.
It's not art. Perhaps her life means a lot to certain interest groups - although I can't see why.
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

Re: Madonna album poll
I'm not so keen on the debut, and after Ray of Light I didn't bother to listen to any more. I voterd for the run from Virgin to Prayer, although it was a toss-up between Erotica and True Blue

I'd be interested to know how widely listened to these albums were on here. I think I remember a few friends buying 'Ray of Light'. That seemed to cross over to a broader market, because I think it astutely tapped into, then current, dance trends in a more knowing or hipper way than her earlier stuff.

Well she was always into trends in dance music, but I know what you mean - the change of direction in Ray of Light basically led me to draw a line - I mean, she'd made some fluff before, b ut that was no hardship. RoL was the first album of hers that was a bit of a chore.

Re: Madonna album poll
Ray of Light is a great album, mostly due to William Orbit. Madonna was clever enough to seek him out in the first place though. Music wasn't as strong less Orbit. I found the albums before in the main patchy.

Re: Madonna album poll
I'm a fan, for sure. There was a point where I finally tuned out, but...this was fairly late in the game, it must be said.
The early albums have some of my favorite singles on them (for lack of a better descriptor, "Material Girl" is MEGA!), but may lack some basic "album magic", perhaps (I'm thinking of songs on the first two like "I Know It" that I would struggle to enjoy). She'd fix this eventually, of course (from Prayer through Confessions, the records seemed to work quite well from start to finish - for me, at least).
I don't know that I'm at the peak of my fandom presently, but...I did see her about 11 years ago (when I most certainly was), and I still maintain it was the best concert/show I'd ever seen.
If I were considering favorite tracks at this point (not an unreasonable gambit), I think "Live To Tell", "Vogue", "Beautiful Stranger", "Borderline", "Take A Bow", "Don't Tell Me", "Frozen", "Crazy For You", "Deeper and Deeper", and a handful of others would represent my tastes as well as anything.

Just on the RoL comments. She'd always used dance music and dance producers, but RoL was more knowing and cutting edge in the way it was approached, as Jeemo says above.
It was smart move and for about a year or two it seemed like she was at the forefront of things and relevant to a point that she hadn't been since the mid eighties.
Then she went and ruined it all with that cover of "American Pie".

As a fan, I can tell you that was a bitter pill to swallow.
I'm sure there's some analogy that escapes me now, but - yes, I suspect I would have been fairly smug in my own fandom in the wake of "Beautiful Stranger", and might have lowered my voice a fair bit in the face of "Pie".

Re: Madonna album poll
I voted for the first three. To a degree they all operate on a 'the good shit is so good I can overlook other parts' principle but there are real pop highs on those records, a bunch of very good stuff and the occasional duffer. I would agree they don't always feel like albums, like a real statement but I'll settle for the highs and I can live with the duffers.
I still feel like I'm getting a bargain.

Ray of Light
True Blue would've been next.

Virgin, Prayer, ROL. All studied with fab stuff; #4 is the debut.

Although songs like Vogue and Open Your Heart mean more to me as individual songs, as albums, I love Music, Confessions and Ray of Light. Confessions is an extraordinary album, and 'What it Feels Like For a Girl' makes Music essential for me.

Yeah, Bedtime Stories is wonderful. I could have chosen that over Ray of Light on another day.

You are right, sorry. It is unusual for me to belittle artists that others hold dearly. I don't know why I wrote this.

I only voted for one - "Ray Of Light" because I actually own that.

Where's "I'm Breathless"? That is one of her best.
