Laurie Anderson - what yah think?
So, after some comments on FB regarding Laurie Anderson discography
What do BCB think of here back catalogue?
Laura Phillips "Laurie" Anderson (born June 5, 1947) is an American avant-garde artist, composer, musician and film director whose work spans performance art, pop music, and multimedia projects. Initially trained in violin and sculpting, Anderson pursued a variety of performance art projects in New York during the 1970s, making particular use of language, technology, and visual imagery. She became widely more known outside the art world in 1981 when her single "O Superman" reached number two on the UK pop charts. She also starred in and directed the 1986 concert film Home of the Brave.
Anderson is a pioneer in electronic music and has invented several devices that she has used in her recordings and performance art shows. In 1977, she created a tape-bow violin that uses recorded magnetic tape on the bow instead of horsehair and a magnetic tape head in the bridge. In the late 1990s, she developed a talking stick, a six-foot (1.8 m) long baton-like MIDI controller that can access and replicate sounds.

I am familiar with everything up to strange angels, and this it is all fantastically brilliant. The United States box set is superb (I have owned it on vinyl since the mid-eighties) - a set of great stories, mostly hilarious ( I often tell people the "song for two jims" story). Strange angels is a superb record.

Her musical reach exceeds her grasp.

In life in general or just Laurie Anderson?
To be fair, you completely sum up my feelings. Besides "Oh Superman" I really don't get it.

Never paid any attention to her records (except O Superman, which would have been difficult to avoid), but I should -- her speaking voice curls my toes.

I guess I'm her only fan then - though only recently delved further than the first couple.

Re: Laurie Anderson - what yah think?
I saw her the first time on the tour that begat the large box. I had a front row seat and ot was fabulous. The multi media stuff was cool as well as her musical instruments and her voice manipulations. one of the coolest concerts I attended in the 80s. I saw her a second time in Berkeley for the Home Of The Brave tour which was very good but it didn't have the impact as the first time. Mr. Heartbreak is my favorite album I think though I still play the massive live set from time to time. I like Big Science/O Superman well enough but I prefer her later recordings. Not sure why I stopped following her releases.

Yes I know, dont know why I exclude it, perhaps as it is a soundtrack
try to go with the studio albums and the USA box (vital for me)

Love some of her stuff - the early BS and MH albums especially. There was also a great 2 CD career overview (Langauge is a Virus?) from about 15 years back.
She can also be great live - at least she is when she does a properly structured show. When she does an improv performance like I saw her do on the third night of her recent Dublin run, she's fucking terrible - more screechy, scratchy violin noodlings rather than softly seductive voiced anecdotes .

Same here.
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

Re: Laurie Anderson - what yah think?
I think she's marvelous.
"United States" is the one that I think should be in every library for future historians to consult.
"Big Science" is the one that won me over to the team - the single wasn't a fluke BUT "Mr Heartbreak" is the one I love and the one I listen to the most. I think it is a joyous fucking thing and how about that band?
"mr heartbreak" never fails to brighten me up a bit and I often need brightening.

Mr Heartbreak is my go-to album of her too. I went for the first three but would take Strange Angels as a good 4th.
