The Police - Roxanne: yea or nay?

Postby fange » 21 Jul 2017, 11:38

How do you feel about this one right now, today?

Listen to it again if it's been a while. Does it make you smile, or make you clench your teeth?

Yeah, I still think it's a good record. The way it speeds up into the chorus is still effective. And although early Police were reviled as bandwagon jumpers, they should be given credit for having their own distinct sound. I did tire of them very quickly though and would gladly deliver all the necessary brickbats for some of their other records. This, though, wouldn't be deserving of that.

btw I like the 'poxy' choice. That's a real 77 word. You don't hear it all now.

:) I know, right. I grew up with it too in the late 70s and early 80s, but nobody seems to say it any more.

Nice accident in the intro too. Followers of Eno no doubt.

Yeah, this energy and scrappiness is absolutely them at their most charming.

I'll always feel a certain affection for it.

Ditto - word for word, although I think I gave them a little more leash on liking them for longer.

It's exhilarating.

Their debut single, 'Fall Out' was even better. And 'Message In A Bottle' retains all its charm.

Its a great record.

I won't hold Synchronicity, Sting's entire post-Police career, nor his tantric TMI with Trudy against it.

I think with all this musical navel gazing is we have the luxury of looking at this stuff 20-30 years in the future. When these folks were releasing records, I wasn't thinking about their legitimacy or legacy. I just liked the music.

I change the station if it comes on.
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Me, aged eight, listening to song in back of car: 'Mum, what does sell your body to the night mean and why doesn't Roxanne have to do it?'
Mum: nothing
Me: 'Eh? But he said'
Mum: Shut UP
You come at the Queen, you best not miss.

It's an idea for another thread but were the Police the least influential major rock band? Hardly anyone as tried to imitate the sound of their records, unless I'm missing something.

True. I think that's due to a weird combination of Copeland and Summers being excellent musicians and therefore not easily imitable and that their central early idea - white reggae- not being very good!

Was that even THEIR idea? There were a lot of white reggae/ska bands around when they arrived.

I think it's hard to detect their influence because it's hard to pin down what they brought to the table that wasn't already there.

the thing always bugged the hell out of me. I'm sure I ridiculed it when the thing came on the radio. I still think the vocal is pretty annoying. BUT, by the "final rave up" at the end, they've got me. I'll admit it. I was probably singing along the last time I heard it even though I do still enjoy making fun of it. I vote: "hell, yeah!"
