Belsen Was a Gas

Postby clive gash » 11 Jul 2017, 14:17

What do you think of this now?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belsen_Was_a_Gas

It's the Pistols riff, brutal, thuggish and draggy.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Plenty of problematic Nazi chic in U.K. Punk, here's the Antz, twice

Quite apart from how ill-conceived the whole thing is ( I believe it's a Sid lyric), it's absolutely second rate musically. Not as good as any of the tracks on their debut

The riff is heavy, Holidays... trogged-out.

Early PIL played it too so Lyndon wasn't done with it yet.

The guitar sounds good, but the tune itself has always felt a bit undercooked.

Some inflammatory lyrics, but I just see it as typical Pistols "scream out things that disgust you" style, culminating with "Be a man/kill someone, Be a man/Kill yourself" which is just chilling.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

It just wasn't very good, I've always thought. Bodies is a better song.

On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

I remember playing and singing it to my parents when I was around 15. "Bodies" too.

It was more like a joke than a serious attempt to frighten them or piss them off. I would sing along and cackle, and they'd give me a "kids these days" look. That's about all the song is good for. Family fun.

it is outrage for outrage sake and the music sounds like nondescript early hardcore. Not even Lydon's vocal can save it.

Pretty much

It's primal, unevolved thuggishness.
