around Syd.- mostly- and he comes over like a total fan boy. His version of Dominos is pretty poor too.

The latest eponymous album is really great. Jangly guitars, quirky lyric all in a context of real musical coherence. The songs are all distinctive, there is absolutely no filler and it all sounds better every time. A real album like they used to make around the end of the 1960s going onto the early 1970s.

Ever since hearing 'Certainly Clickot' I have been convinced that I had heard it before. Today it came to me - the Co-op bank used to use an instrumental version of it as their phone hold music!

Probably one of his better monthly checks too.

I don't think about it very much because it tends to make me sad, but a guy like Hitchcock, who's put out so many wonderful albums, should have a pretty comfortable living by now and get to pick and choose his tours.

Unfortunately, although he probably has a pretty global fanbase, it's probably relatively tiny as are his album sales and he still tours to survive. There are worse ways to make a living, but it's gotta get a little old.

Pretty much agree with you, but, hey, at least he's able to earn a crust doing something he loves and is exceptionally good at for a pretty solid base of fans who adore what it is he does.

Was lucky enough to see him play an acoustic set with John Paul Jones at some tiny venue in North London whose name escapes me about three Christmases back. They were splendid.

My mouth was hanging open, like I'd seen fire for the first time.
I feel like a right twat for not investigating earlier. My husband did nag, but I didn't listen.

Mr Hitchcock has been a constant presence in my life ever since Black Snake Diamond Role. That album taught me more about music than anything ever and was a tiny node that led me into ever increasing possibilities of what was acceptable music-wise. Recorded on a barge and under a railway track under duress (truth), it is the sound of a mind coping with its lot. Get that down you throat as soon as is humanly possible.

And Eye. Get Eye.

And get Moss Elixir and listen to 'The Speed of Things' where he addresses the life process in poetic form.

And get one of his noisy things: say the transitional Soft Boys years, with Empty Girl, Let Me Put it Next to You or Love Poisoning

But that verbal introductory piece and performance of Airscape on Storefront already tells you more than you need to know.

In fact, much like life, most of his stuff is good and the shit stuff is obvious

I've been a fan of The Incredible String Band for about 40 years so at the last minute I decided to go along to a performance at this year's Edinburgh International Festival called The Music Of The Incredible String Band. I had no idea what to expect except that it would probably involve Mike Heron and almost certainly not involve Robin Williamson.

At the start of the concert about 20 people came out on stage and I had no idea who any of them were. Then I noticed a guy with white floppy hair and a flowery shirt. "Nah, surely not", I thought. "It couldn't be. Well, maybe it could be. Could it? No, probably not"

"Hello, I'm Robyn Hitchcock" he said. "And this", gesturing at a tall bloke with a greying beard, "is Green Gartside".

Well, I wasn't expecting that.

Yes indeed young Billy, I have Eye. It's been on a fairly steady rotation. Thanks for all the other tips. You know that fairy tale The Secret Garden? Not the porn one the actual book for youngsters. When I listen to Eye I feel like what the girl saw when she was through the door.

His newest is on heavy rotation chez K-Tel these days. I think it's one of his strongest albums yet, and that makes me very happy.
