BCB's favourite KINKS songs poll: dealine is 15/8!

Postby fange » 09 Jul 2017, 02:48

Just like we did with The Rolling Stones a few years ago, i'm thinking of running a poll to see which are BCB's favourite songs by The Kinks.

Make a list of your 20 favourite Kinks songs - 1 being your most favourite - and then you'll PM your list to me, or email it.

I'll give you about a month, and i'll tally the results and present the final order of the most popular songs in mid-August.

Have fun!

-------------

(By the way, I can't seem to find the Rolling Stones poll thread with the search function.
Can somebody help with that? hatzy, Martha? Please leave me a link here if you can locate the thread. cheers.)

-------------

So, a simple idea - let's find out which songs by The Kinks are the most popular amongst the people here on BCB.

I'd like to do it this way...

1. Make a list of your 20 favourite songs recorded by The Kinks. These songs can be from any time during their career, from any album or single, etc.

2. The number 1 song should be the one you love MOST, on down to number 20 in descending order of love (if that makes sense). I know this can be tough, but just try and do it on how you feel. It ain't rocket science.
I will then assign each number 1 song on people's lists 25 points, the number 2 song 24 points, etc, down to number 20 which will get 6 points.

3. Please DON'T post your lists here on this thread. I'd like to do it more personally without people being distracted by others' lists. Of course this thread can be all about people's thoughts, opinions, etc. but I DON'T want the actual lists here.
PLEASE PM ME YOUR LIST WHEN YOU ARE DONE. Or I can give you my email if needed.

That's it. I'll leave the poll open for about 1 month, about mid-August. Then i'll tally up the results and post them here.

So, get going on those lists!

Cool project! This should be easier for me than the Stones thing was.

Revisiting some of this stuff in haphazard fashion and two things jump out at me (again). First, the singles that came after Kinda Kinks (Set Me Free/I Need You & See My Friends/Never Met A Girl Like You Before) are an obvious, early high water mark for me. Also, VGPS sounds so thin to me. I would like it to be a little denser (sonically), maybe like Odessey & Oracle. Like a lot of Kinks records, Davies really carries them almost singlehandedly by virtue of his voice and the melody.

That's an interesting notion, one i'll keep in mind when i'm re-listening to the albums in the coming weeks.

That's an interesting comment, I guess that as much as I love Village Green, it is caught in its own little world. It's beautifully wrought, but it lacks the clear-eyed and sharp sense of attack of Face to Face , which really has its sights on the modern society. Admittedly, there is a bitterness to some songs ("Party Line") and a sense of emotional burnout to others ("Rosie Won't You Please Come Home", "Too Much on My Mind"), but throughout, Davies sounds thoroughly engaged in the present. As a result, the best tracks sparkle with a melodic wit ("Sunny Afternoon", "I Remember", "House in the Country"). Face to Face (and to a lesser extent Something Else) is the record where all the pieces come into place, Village Green is the record where they try to run from the present.

It's interesting that you mentioned Odessey & Oracle. For years, I found it overly prissy and florid, but then one day it all seemed to come into place and sounded just right for what it was. True, I think some of the tracks could do with a bit of the toughness that "Time of the Season" invokes, but overall it's a very complete record, full of optimism and hope.
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

Sent my list in. Surprised how easy it was. I may yet remember the one I overlooked, but the lifelong favorites are in there.
