It's a cliche to say Costello, fulfilling the Lennon role, and Macca, making a point of seeing things through, brought out the best in each other as opposed to (mercifully) the worst.

It's a cliche, but it's true.

Prefer "Veronica" and "Pads, Paws and Claws" and "That Day is Done," but couldn't be further from shit, particularly considering it was the 80s.

Listening to it again, it wasn't as good as I remembered in my head - I'd forgotten that late 80s production which does it no favours. Still it is a very appealing melody (with the chorus its main strength), and as such the kind of thing McCartney does very well. A hit.

Would be nice if the three who voted 'shit' would come out and rant and rave a bit so we wouldn't have the usual tiresome equanimity

I don't know what to think. I vaguely remember it the first time round. It sounds like a chicken defrosting on a Formica counter.

You forgot the patented Beatles major sixth chord which we're supposed to respond to Pavlovian-like. I used to like it for all the obvious reasons, but I've grown pretty tired of it. Too facile and the harking back to Beatle days is tiresome. 'Veronica' and a couple others from the Costello collaboration were better.

The Beatles' references in the video were a surprise at the time, I seem to remember. He hadn't been as obvious about it before.

I think when this came out people were relieved as much as anything (the appalling 'Spies Like Us' was still very fresh in the memory) but it's still a pretty mediocre effort.

Were there any really good solo Beatles' singles after 1975?

(I suppose that discounts John pretty much, unless you rate 'Woman' or 'Starting Over')

It's entirely awful. It's got that awful production job, where the drum sounds like a damp tea tray, and the awful backing vocals sound like pieces of polystyrene being rubbed together. The song sounds like Big Country. None of these things are a positive.

Liked it then, like it now. It's not great though. That album is, to this day, the last McCartney album I've ever heard.
I could have been Hitler in England. Wouldn't have been hard. It was awesome. Actually, I wonder … I think I might have been a bloody good Hitler. I'd be an excellent dictator. Very eccentric and quite mad. - David Bowie

There's decent, likable stuff like this or 'Coming Up', but "really good"? No.

I think I'd probably prefer "Spies Like Us."
