A continuation of the above digression:

"The Avocado Mafia goes 'new wave'":

"The East Coast equivalent (I assume they were called "The Regular Mafia)":

Two (by then) old guard establishment rockers adapt to the winds of change as best they can.

I found contemporaneous (rather damning) reviews of the two parent albums (not to imply that Rolling Stone was ever "it", but it is interesting to revisit evidence that there was a time when you wouldn't get fired or censored for giving Hootie a negative review - these writers seem to absolutely give a fuck about the state of music):

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/mad-love-19800403

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/glass-houses-19800501

(Also semi relevant - both Ronstadt and Joel would follow their "new wave lite" periods with full on retreats away from contemporary relevance - Joel temporarily into little miniature replicas of 60s/50s idioms, and Ronstadt somewhat more permanently into standards, Broadway and,,,canciones)

Is this the thread for Weezer's 'Buddy Holly'?

Yes.

The esteemed participants/philosophers are using sophisticated and technical language to explore each and every nook and cranny of the magnum opus you are referring to.

Let their superb and finely grained analysis cum appraisal just wash over you.

See it as BCB's version of the reception study of Ulysses, Finnegan's Wake and Moby-Dick all rolled into one.

Once all of its incomparable riches will have sunk deeply into your soul, you will realize you got the gift of a lifetime.

For free.
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

This is one of Katie Perry's current tour posters...

It's like the late-70s and early-80s all over again. For my kids though, that's the future.

Definitely not calculatedly cashing in on the wave of heightened Bowie-ness since his death.

Part of me would like to know whose idea it was, you know. Was it largely driven by KP because she's into fashion and she thinks that period is the next 'thing', or was it her publicist's idea, the graphic design team, or maybe just a combination of all of them. Who was it who ultimately thought "Yes, making Katie look like an extra in the 'Fade To Grey' video is a great idea. That's the next big thing, the kids are gonna love it."

Similar things have been done many times, sure, but the colors and framing of this one scream Aladdin Sane.

Yes, fellas, it is a very BCB conundrum. :)

This was a great thread - and not that long ago. BCB can still pull one out now and then.

I just enjoyed that Linda Ronstadt song:

How Do I Make You ADHD?

A classic. And I do understand today's world somewhat better.

Paging Quaco/Bob Lee/hatz/Davey/bix - people possibly a few years older than me who remember the sort of second tier of Go Gos era Los Angeles area local music. I'm sure every town had 'em - our New Orleans resident new wave band were called The Cold (nice, concise, reactionary, modern sounding name). And I believe we also produced the Red Rockers (of "China" fame).

MAYBE I dreamed all of this?

Well that's before I was in LA. I can't think of any that seemed especially inorganic or phony that made it back in NJ where I was living.

Here are a couple that were big in Philly.

There's some affectations suggesting new wave but you sense they could have gone full BTO if that was the popular style of their time, just as easily.
