Re: Lenny Kravitz
Your post describes exactly how I feel about him. I still have the first two but haven't heard them in ages. Not sure I would like them as much now, tbh.
Nobody's ferpect.

Re: Lenny Kravitz
Yeah, same here really. I didn't mind a few of his songs off those first two albums - which I liked but never loved - and then he lost me totally with 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' as well, and I've not been tempted by anything since really.
His jackdaw approach to 60s and 70s musical styles was limited, and his lack of an original sound or approach was laid bare pretty quickly.

Yip -- I was in a coffee shop a few weeks ago and they were piping his Best Of. The Let Love Rule era was decent, everything else an overworked pastiche - he even did a few Stax soul type songs

Just to sound like a broken record I have to completely agree with everyone else....some decent stuff on the first two but lost interest with the next one and never checked out anything since.

I have time for some of his stuff but if I never hear him again, I'd not notice.
Besides this - which is one of the great singles of the 90's:
Beautiful.

What's right with it? It's a boring riff, with boring cliched lyrics and boring vocals. I can hardly stay awake just thinking about it.

Re: Lenny Kravitz
I mean - if I DIDN'T pop along and offer my (not especially generous) assessment of the man and his work, I think it's safe to say that my views would be well represented in my absence.
And, shit - once that happens, my description of the man (at his BEST, I'm afraid) as shorthand for a certain type of "on the nose" facsimile of certain idioms, totems and eras (and, as I've learned, I like him even less when he's giving you "pure Lenny")...well, maybe that description itself becomes a bit 'trite" or "rote" or "perfunctory" in its own way.
And, well, that's just worse than my saying nothing.
You can't win.

I concur with everything everyone's written. His cover of American Woman kinda epitomizes his own approach to rock - Hamfisted music with okay lyrics.

Re: Lenny Kravitz
I just looked and he has apparently put out 10 albums. When the fuck did that happen? I'm almost curious to hear his last five. Get to the bottom of this.

Re: Lenny Kravitz
Ok. Curiosity got the best of me. I went to the Spotify and put on his 'latest' album from '2014'. Look at this goddamn cover:
I mean, who names an album 'Strut' in '2014'? And the track names read like a Lenny Kravitz parody. Almost too on the nose.
1 Sex
2 The Chamber
3 Dirty White Boots
4 New York City
5 The Pleasure and the Pain
6 Strut
7 Frankenstein
8 She's a Beast
9 I'm a Believer
10 Happy Birthday
11 I Never Want to Let You Down
It's playing right now, and I still can't believe it's real. The second track sounds like some Weird Al parody of Heart of Glass and he actually says 'heart of glass' in the lyrics. Multiple times. It's part of the chorus. This happens.

Re: Lenny Kravitz
One last comment and then I have to turn this off. It's really not very fun to listen to '2014' Lenny Kravitz.
BUT, the laziness of this song demands to be heard. Now, I worked at a corporate music store in the mid to late 90's and had to listen to Hootie and the Blowfish, the Wallflowers, Matchbox 20 etc. in-store on repeat but this beats them all in the 'holy shit I made a rock song' sort of laziness. My jaw is dropped. Like, what?? An adult man made this. An adult man who named his tenth album 'Strut', but still!

Yeah, I found out she was in the latest Mad Max. I didn't know that was his daughter.
