Bacharach / David songbook: pick FIVE

Postby Canis lupus » 13 May 2017, 10:56

Reduced to twenty tracks* (no doubt there's other numbers you prefer), but regardless: pretty impressive back catalogue, no?

Pick any Five (far from easy: you can alter your opinion later)

I've listed my preferred rendition, you can opt for another version.

*=(sorry, no time to dig out all the clips right now)

'We Have All The Time In The World" is John Barry/Hal David (and, yes, to my mind, no less sublime than your other options).

Anyhow, today I'd pick...

"Wives and Lovers" - Jack Jones
"In Between the Heartaches" - Dionne Warwick
"My Little Red Book" - Love
"In the Land of Make Believe" - Dusty Springfield
"This Guy's In Love With You" - Herb Alpert

Certainly, honorable mention to many, many others.

Something like this. All excellent tracks:

"Make it Easy On Yourself" - The Walker Brothers
"What the World Needs Now" - Jackie DeShannon
"I Say a Little Prayer" - Aretha
"The Look of Love" - Dusty Springfield
"Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" - BJ Thomas

Baby Its You
Don't Make Me Over
The Look of Love
This Guy's in Love with You
(They Long to Be) Close to You

I'd put One Less Bell to Answer in there; it's my favorite David lyric.
And Any Day Now, but the lyrics are by Bob Hilliard.

and, of course, this, with lyrics by David's brother, Mack:

Of these, I went with:

Walk On By
I Say a Little Prayer
This Guy's in Love
Anyone Who Had a Heart
Make It Easy On Yourself

A staggeringly great group of songs.

I substituted "Baby It's You" for "Make It Easy On Yourself".

Sometimes a Bacharach/David comp is the greatest music on the planet.

My votes went to -

"24 hours from Tulsa",
"Always something there to remind me"
"Walk on By"
"Do you know the way to San Jose"
"This Guys in love with you"

I have an ISSUE with the make up in the lyrics of of "Wives and Lovers" and "I Say a Little Prayer". Chauvinistic Pig.

I know this is slightly straying from topic but this may just be the best book on music (certainly on song composition) I've ever read :

A really beautiful recollection of these mighty songwriting partnerships, written with true reverence but not afraid to highlight some of the difficulties in inter-personal relationships.

Do yourself a favour and get a copy.

Seconded, and I've read a LOT of them.

Worth the price for allowing you to smirk whenever anyone refers to Goffin and King as "Brill Building" writers. And there's a lot more.

"The Look of Love" and "Make it Easy on Yourself" are the only ones I love on this list.

Oops, didn't see "Always Something There to Remind Me."

Of that bunch, I'd stay with four, and substitute my also-ran for Don't Make Me Over (I'm voting songs; not records. And to hell with the list)

Baby Its You
Don't Make Me Over One Less Bell to Answer
The Look of Love
This Guy's in Love with You
(They Long to Be) Close to You
Things that a fella can't forget...

Christ, that Bobbie Gentry is good.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

I narrowed it down to 10.
I’m afraid that’s the best I can do.
