There are more Neil Young records I like a lot, but when Stevie Wonder is on, there's almost nothing better. An impossible choice.

Yeah, but the harmonica is the only instrument he's ever played anything interesting on, pot ruined what sensibility he had and he's at least partly responsible for some of the vilest gloop ever poured into my protesting ears. Go talk to the plants and plait your beads you wazzock! You shoulda been a contender. All downhill from Fingertips
And as for Neil, he ain't the greatest, and he's pooed up the place a few times too in his dotage, but we'll always have Arc and Cortez.

Well, almost an impossible choice for me. Both have done a handful of albums and a whole heap of songs I wouldn't ever want to live without.

Neil and I didn't have to think about it at all.

We're a bunch of mostly white male rockers. Is there even the slightest shred of a doubt who's going to win?

Course not.
Would it kill us to have a bit of discussion on the way?

There's about the same amount of worthwhile albums from both, mostly from the 70s. I'm more likely to pull out - and enjoy - a Stevie album.

yeah it all comes down to their respective purple patches in the 70s.
Young has done more of note outside his 'primo years,' but Stevie's highs are just SO high

If the question is who is "better," then it has to be Stevie since he's a five tool player---music just pours out of him.

Re: NEIL YOUNG vs STEVIE WONDER
It's Neil for me but by the smallest possible whisker. Next month I may fancy Stevie's work more.
In the end, Neil has at least produced some things worthy of note since "Songs In The Key Of Life"... Stevie maybe three or four tracks maximum.

Re: NEIL YOUNG vs STEVIE WONDER
Both gods. Neil's primitivism is fucking HEAVY - some of that shit ca. 69-75 is borderline ALL impulse/emotion (Don't Let It Bring You Down). It's the sort of thing I tacitly devalue other artists for lacking.
Stevie in his own way (far more advanced/finessed on a number of levels - sonically, mechanically, etc.) also seems to be just BLEEDING the shit out.
I really do think of them both as having a certain "Here it is, people - scoop it up with a ladle if you want some of this shit!" quality at their best.
I DJ'd last night with a friend (all 45s), and he played 'Big Brother' - never a favorite of mine, but hearing it over a slamming PA system, I was kind of tripping on a lot of the casual elements (how and when and why he double tracks or embellishes a vocal).
They aren't (in terms of HOW they operate) a million miles apart.

Re: NEIL YOUNG vs STEVIE WONDER
It'd be quite interesting to narrow the focus and look at them a little more closely, say in terms of just their '60s output too.

Re: NEIL YOUNG vs STEVIE WONDER
There was a period when music seemed to pour out of both of them to the point where I wouldn't dispute anybody labeling them a "genius". Like Prince or Dylan both have that WTF quality where they just seem possessed and staggeringly fruitful for a period. And yet, Stevie was flawed, even during his peak years, in a way that Young wasn't during his imo. The syrupy stuff IS annoying, even his greatest albums are a bit patchy, there are occasional longueurs (similar to Prince in that respect) and then he falls off a cliff. Youngs run in the 70s (I include Everybody Knows... because that really is the beginning) is at least as good as Wonders. I prefer it myself plus you have the unreleased stuff (Cmon Neil, give us Archives 2) AND the live performances which are sometimes transcendent and as great as rock n roll ever gets. Neils music, rooted in folk probably made it easier to maintain his creativity, in bursts anyway than Wonder who was a more revolutionary artist/alchemist who naturally dried up quicker.

Re: NEIL YOUNG vs STEVIE WONDER
Neil also falls off a cliff after Rust Never Sleeps. He just recovered for 5 years between Eldorado and Sleeps With Angels - and that's only 5 studio records.

OK, but Stevie has had two good songs since In Square Circle [1985]
