I'm massively disappointed that phone ringing at the beginning didn't end with "Hello, who is that speaking please? I'M ON A PARTY LINE WONDERING ALL THE TIME"

It's dumb but I love it. From a surprisingly decent album.

I remember the first time I heard it in the 80's and thinking it was great. Still do. Goes on a bit, though...

Adore it. I even bought the 45, and played it over and over again. And the video (which I don't think I saw 'til later) is a hoot.

I'd say the parent album is about half-great, half-dreck.

Runs out of ideas after 20 seconds, and it wasn't a good idea in the first place. Shit.

Ditto. It's a reminder that Reed came from the old Tin Pan Alley school of songwriting. Kinda like Paul Simon.

HIT! I always like a song that makes a reference to an older song.

It's great. Haven't heard it much since the eighties so it hasn't overstayed its welcome on radio either. And that album is good, too. Not as good as The Blue Mask or New York in terms of '80s Lou, but easily as good as the more praised Legendary Hearts, say. I used to hear "Red Joystick" on the radio too.
I could have been Hitler in England. Wouldn't have been hard. It was awesome. Actually, I wonder … I think I might have been a bloody good Hitler. I'd be an excellent dictator. Very eccentric and quite mad. - David Bowie

I've always liked this one.

Hate the opening, but once he gets to the song, it's hit all the way. I really like the sound he gets in that era - busy bass and all - but it requires decent songs to work. This is one of the better ones, though a better opening line would've been nice.

That fretless bass? Horrible. Meowing all over the place. Fernando Saunders, wasn't it?

Apart from that it's pretty good.

I'm not sure "Rock n' Roll" was such great shakes as a song, but it was such a life affirming performance and great sounding record. Replace the sheer verve of The Velvets with a deadening MTV mid 80s production and you get this. Its heart is in the right place, but it sounds like an old man trying to update his sound to get a hit. It can never shake that desperation.
SHIT (although mediocre would be nearer the mark).

It's Loy Reed not taking himself too seriously, which makes it both rare and good.
