I suppose it depends how much tolerance you have for synthetic 80s production. His voice sort of sits on top like a great old monument but...I dunno. He did better.

To me it almost seems like a Last Statement, you know? i don't think the production is objectionable. Sure it sounds 80s ish but not in a terrible way. Yeah he did better, of course, but there is something great and sweeping there. I find it quite moving.

Yeah, but if
I criticize the 80s sound, I'm a Rolling Stone-worshipping American!
It's the Jeff Lynne-isms more than the 80s sound per se, but his voice does survive it. Just makes it good rather than great.

As if Coan's not an NME-worshipping Briton.

Me too. Hurrah! Another point of contact.
Got nothing to add about the Orbison to what's been said already. I don't mind the production as much as some.

Hate the first one. I looked up I Drove All Night to see if Tom Petty wrote it because it sounds like one of his atrocious attempts during the '80s, and I 'm a huge fan. It doesn't suit Orbison at all or befit his legacy.
Lauper could more easily get away with something like this.

She performed it on David Letterman when it came out and it killed the single version.
