"Give it Up" is the only one that's truly awful. Bonnie and Toto are represented by silly songs that at least make a pleasant noise.
I openly like Lionel's contribution, but not as much as my favorite performance on any of these - Helen Terry's singing on "Church." Not one of my favorite CC songs, but she really elevates it.

They're all very good but 'Give It Up' is killer.
I didn't like it much at the time. I remember going to Germany on a school exchange in summer '83 and the thing was fucking HUGE. Kids in line doing synchronised dances, yelling the chorus, grinning like goons. But I heard it again a few nights ago on the TOTP repeats and it knocked me out. The bassline, especially, is magical.

Ho hum. The usual anti-pop sentiment from the US contingent.

The only one I think stands up is Church of the Poisoned Mind. The other are schlock.

Re: five from 1983
It's a close call between "Give it up" and "Church of the Poisoned Mind", but I eventually plumped for KC. If you're going to choose between 5 slices of silliness, and least pick the one that sounds fun.
Toto's "Africa" has the worst use of metaphor in the history of the English language, and is an affront to mankind.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Re: five from 1983
Given how often 'Africa' has been brought up over the years here as a 'guilty pleasure', I thought it'd have walked it here.
