Punk vs Prog

So we have had a bunch of prog post of late and of course they have plenty of comments about good or bad.
So here is the question? If you had only could listen to one genre for a month which would it be?

If you want to pick based on which is better that is okay too.
there is no option for neither - if you don't like either then leave the thread.

I'm pretty flighty to my musical tastes so a month of any one thing is is three weeks too much. A month of prog would feel like being forced to read James Joyce's Ulysses or Finnegan's Wake where punk would be a bunch of short stories that would get over with faster.At least if I didn't like something, I'd only have to wait two minutes instead of 10.

Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell is still one of the top-selling albums of all time. I remember when it came out, it was pretty huge. And yet, to this day I have never known anyone to have a copy of it. I know I've never seen it in anyone's record collection. That's over 20 million albums I've never seen anywhere. We're talking 40 years here. It's an odd phenomenon.

Which has nothing to do with the question, of course. I was just thinking about that and was overcome by the urge to post about it on the internet.

There's so much lousy music from both genres, it's hard to wave the flag for anyone. Those neoproggers who came along in the '90s were the final nail in that coffin.

Punk. I'm not a massive fan of the genre, but there'll be some chunky riffs and catchy hooks that I could definitely enjoy. Prog is essentially the place where musical skill and an absence of taste collide. So you get the kind of music I didn't like (bluesy rock with too much synth) played really really well for far too long.

Nah, NWOBHM was clunky riffs and sweat. You'd probably be looking more to the likes of Steve Vai, Dream Theatre, and Dragonforce. Which although ostensibly rock, are really prog under the hood, due to technical skills and lack of taste. It's a definition that can't be broken. Note that bands with technical skills but taste went to the extremes and chose to become German in the 1970s, just to create their own genre.

I have all the classic punk albums.

But if push came to shove, I wouldn't swap any, in exchange for for my classic prog favourites.

Long live prog! Just not anything after 1980...Marillion, aside.

Blues in prog? roots of prog are mostly jazz, folk or classical music. Actually that is what I like about prog it isn't all based on the blues.

In regard to the question - We listen to both and listen to plenty of bands influenced by both or heck even both in the same band.
However, we listen to multiple styles of music and couldn't make it on just punk for a month. Prog gives me various forms of rock so I would be able to get by for a month.

I would also take Prog over Punk - it would be a lot closer if we made it prog vs punk/New Wave and all its post influences.

I'll also make the point that Punk and prog did have crossover.
