To the Genesis contemporary to his work? Well, duh. To the Genesis he was a part of? You need a sledgehammer to the face.

I do think the best two records he's been involved in (as an artist or band member at least) are The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Selling England by the Pound, but he's had a great solo career all the same.

I presume you mean the Genesis Gabriel years. I haven't listened to his early solo stuff in some time but I would say his early solo albums are more consistent but probably lack the highs. I would rate 3, however, at least the equal of Foxtrot and better than England but not as good as Lamb.

I lost track of him after So

Regarding solo, he reach his peak with III and IV
As band member, selling and lamb

From So and beyond, he is boring as hell!
And slow! Should take a few points from mr. Hammill!

my answer is both where vastly superior to everything else. :P

The genesis run from Tresspass to Lamb
Gabriel 1 to So

both great runs.

His solo career is certainly very good in its own right. It also provided him with a platform to experiment with more diverse themes than he did with Genesis. That being said, I cannot confidently rank any solo album of his higher than I rank Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Those albums are masterpieces of progressive rock.

I do like the first four solo LPs better.

I can see why someone would prefer solo Gabriel to Gabriel w/ Genesis. Not me, though.

I just evened it up with my maybe. I generally don't play Genesis albums, but when I do, I like them more than I remember. I play Gabriel records more often, and like them less.

I don't go along with the notion that he fell off a cliff after So, mind you. Up and Us definitely have their moments. it's his world beat experiments (save 4, of course) where he loses me.

I also don't go with the off a cliff with So or after So. SO is a great album and Up and Us have wonderful stuff on them too. I'm also a fan of Passion and some of his world music stuff. His scratch my back stuff was a cool idea but it didn't work.

Correct.
I've tried with Genesis and not been impressed whereas Gabriel's solo stuff is great.

Nah, Ovo is great, and Up and Us are also very good.

An artist that became a slave to technology. Us has its moments but it's too bloody long. He took so long to make Up that it was hopelessly out of date when it came out. The Barry Williams Show about reality TV shows was about 10 years after the fact.

The covers project was turgid stuff.

I saw the back to front tour, and it was average at best. Any momentum in the show was halted after every song as they had to rearrange the lights and onstage roadies before the next song.

I was a huge Gabriel fan growing up. Now I'd struggle to walk across the road to see him.

I like 1 and So but neither of those come particularly close to most Genesis albums with or without him.

The rest of his output just hasn't done it for me.
