I should add the reason I wrote my post was entirely because I was in a situation (and am frequently now because of my guitar lessons) where we have songwriter appreciation. Everyone has to give their views on the songs people bring. And in those situations, it's very hard to be as honest as I want to be.

Oh, yeah - my own sympathetic discomfort was considerable when reading about the "So - what do YOU think?" scenario of the guitar class. That is a palpable "Oh, dear God - PLEASE let them play something that doesn't make me squirm" scenario.

I don't know that it's ever happened, certainly not in the last 40 years. People who know me, know me, and those that don't, it just never comes up. Not that I give any outward appearance of liking music anyway, largely because I don't. I (used to) like records. Live music has had little or no interest for decades, and I've been known to cross the street to avoid it.
