Sister Sledge (RIP Joni)

Postby fange » 13 Mar 2017, 05:13

Prompted in part by the sad passing of founding member Joni, here's a thread to discuss her group, Sister Sledge. RIP Joni

*Did you like Sister Sledge at the time?

*What do you think of their music now?

*Any fave albums or songs?

I've always loved this one...

It's so effortlessly-sounding cool, the sound of the disco dance floor with a huge beating heart.
It's great, no?

RIP Joni S - very, very sudden according to the news this am

Better change the thread title, btw, or Coan might think that Joni Mitchell has died after joining Sister Sledge

I thought they were great, in hindsight the last great 'girl group' (as a genre), and I would happily listen to them today, unlike many past favourites.

RIP Joni

Yep, agreed. They always that wonderful girl group feel and togetherness that added so much to the music.

I bought the We Are Family album when it came out, which was a change from my diet of (mainly pre war) blues, Beatles & 60s stuff such as Jefferson Airplane & the Zombies. It's a cracker of an album, but I never felt much of an affinity for the group & no need to explore further. I think of the album more as a Chic masterpiece rather than by the Sisters. Is there more of their work worth seeking out?

That's the best album by a long shot, Josh. I still have a lot of time for some other singles from before and after it, like 'Blockbuster Boy' and 'All American Girls', but a comp. is perfect for collecting those.

I love the imperial phase stuff of course but particularly dig this pre-Nile belter. RIP...
