Pete, my memory fails me sometimes.... did Jimmy play this solo on the guitar given to him by Joe Walsh?

Pretty sure it was a 59 Telecaster? The one he used on stage with the weird painting on it for most of early '69?

A good piece here Reap......

How did they get that tubs sound?

.

Bottom of a stairwell.

And a few strategically suspended/placed microphones. Didn't they put one or two in a cupboard somewhere in Headley Grange just to get some ambient sound?

As I recall it was a single mic placed in the stairwell above the kit...obviously the kit was mic'ed as normal, but that one mic gave that astonishing sound. There's a lovely interview where Jimmy said they played it back for the first time as they were getting levels and everyone there just sat and smiled from ear to ear in absolute awe. Can you imagine hearing that for the very first time? :D

It's funny how recollections of things are altered over time, isn't it?

This is Andy Johns, the engineer on "Levee" and other parts of "IV". I do remember both Jimmy & JPJ contesting some of his claims in this piece - but, broadly, they agree on 'the spirit' of the recordings.

Excellent article, thanks. I knew I had the details messed up, it was Jeff Beck that gave it to him.

What a collection of guitars. And that 12 string he used to record Tangerine is just beyond cool. Kath wants one. But then, she also wants one of every percussion instrument this side of Neptune.

I read an account of Andy Johns saying it was two mic's, one 10 feet up and one 20 feet up, but then Robert and Jimmy both remember it as just the one mic. As you said in another post, funny how people's memories are. 45+ years on and with the amount of liquids and substances around at the time it's a miracle anybody remembers any details at all.

There are some moments in history I'd love to go back and be a fly on the wall for. This would be near the top. No one has ever topped that drum sound. I doubt anyone ever will.

I think the mic in the cupboard story was for one or more of the other tracks on the album. 45+ years on from my birth and too many liquids under the bridge to remember any more than that.

An interesting and detailed piece from a friend of mine, Andy Adams ( no known as "Mr Tapes" for no reason, I may add...) about "Black Dog.

So, as I said, Jimmy can bugger off claiming it was inspired by "Oh Well"!!

When kath returns we will be enjoying ten of Reap's favourite albums, over ten weeks, in the usual PSL slot.

LZ4 was his favourite album ever so will be one of those ten. However, it wouldn't be right to rerun the album without him. So this 'recent' PSL [March '19], in which Reap contributed, will be the basis of the Reap Listens.

All ten will run on this thread - so they will all be together.

They will then be moved to 'classics' or elsewhere - kath's choice for posterity.

Sleep well Reap but get ready to rock!
