Somewhat randomly I found this NME Writers' List of top albums:

2. All Mod Cons - The Jam
3. This Years Model - Elvis Costello
4. More Songs About Buildings & Food - Talking Heads
5. Africa Stand Alone - Culture
6. Peter Gabriel (2) - Peter Gabriel
7. Street Legal - Bob Dylan
8. Dub Housing - Pere Ubu
9. Germ Free Adolescents - X Ray Spex
10. David Johansen - David Johansen
11. The Modern Dance - Pere Ubu
12. The Scream - Siouxsie & The Banshees
13. Moving Targets - Penetration
14. Shiny Beast - Captain Beefheart
15. Rasta Communication - Keith Hudson
16. An American Prayer - Jim Morrison
17. Who Are You - The Who
18. Some Girls - The Rolling Stones
19. Marcus Children - Burning Spear
20. Real Life - Magazine
21. Blue Valentine - Tom Waits
22. Go 2 - Xtc
23. Jazz - Ry Cooder
24. We Are Not Men... - Devo
25. Another Music In A Different Kitchen. - The Buzzcocks
26. Dynamite Daze - Kevin Coyne
27. Give 'Em Enough Rope - The Clash
28. First Edition - Public Image
29. Live & Dangerous - Thin Lizzy
30. Man Machine - Kraftwerk

Now I understand why I wrote in NDL, asked for things to be invented: 'a great pop LP for this decade'.

Much better than that 70s nadir, 1978 :)
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Good call, Yves - also a fantastic list.

It's this: IMHO both lists represent enormous quality, daring, imagination, diversity, well: sheer pizazz.

The '68 one is defining of its era, the '78 one too. Boundless creativity in all directions. I found the '78 one, by the way, when I was searching for a Culture bootleg: Africa Stand Alone, and I was astonished that this LP, very rare at the time, and unofficial, simply got thrown in there by the NME staff, at #5.

Which leads me to the central point: I myself can not perceive the above qualities in today's music, and not even in that of the noughties, with very few exceptions.

'Keeping Up With Things' has become a ritual for me, not the great hobby it once was.

I refuse to take the old standard explanation: hey, your getting older, Frank, today's youth make their own choices, you know?

Today's pop/rock perfectly reflects the current political (ethical, economical, human (?)) condition: corrosion, decay, of democracy, and it also seems that people experience a serious illness: the loss of common values, in every aspect of life.

(I wanted to write much more, will refrain from that though. Sorry for all my rambling. Music, art itself, can only resonate in a context of shared values, shared horizons, in a context where ordinary people agree on the most important things in life - is my idea.)
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

1978 was a hell of a year, but no better than 1977, '79 or '80.

In this thread: old people talk about how old music was better, but being old has nothing to do with it.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Being old has nothing to do with it. There's still great new music being made in the here and now.

It's just that old music has been longer with us.

Don't know, Yves.

Occasionally I listen to new stuff. And then, I think of numerous 'test tracks' I choose via BCB, Pitchfork, an so on: high standard, good sound, fine musicianship, decent singing... but it then escapes me completely why such a song, such an album shoud land in any top-XX list of a given year.

I hear emulation, cherry-picking, instrumental craftsmanship, a lot of self-consciousness, but I miss authenticity, meaning, soul, love.

Perhaps I, being a lover of naïve optimism as well as cultural relevance in music, am not easy to satisfy.
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

I think this way about any era of music. If listening to music is indeed a subjective experience, how can there be so many magazines and critics which agree on a pretty narrow consensus of best 20 albums of any given year? I'm not saying all music is equally palatable to all ears, but can there really be so many people who think that Oasis (just as an example) were that much more outstanding than their peers?

I sometimes wonder if I think a bit differently about music because the music that was 'culturally relevant' when I was in my formative years never meant shit to me. I don't have much in the mainstream to look fondly on, the mainstream/indie scene pretty much went from Madchester - shoegaze - Britpop in my teens to twenties. I was always looking backwards to the post-punk era, or further back to folk.
