Re: Man - their finest albums?
Difficult one to assess. True, the live albums give them scope to extend and experiment, but the songs are to be found on the studio albums. Can you have one without the other? Maybe with a band like Man. Fave albums? Love them all, to be honest, but if I had to choose, probably " Be good to yourself ....", giving me the best of both worlds

I'd second that, it feels like a live performance but with studio polish if that makes sense. But is it a proper Man album without Deke?

His replacements were more than adequate to keep the band steaming along, but they lost a certain quirkiness and, dare I say, originality when he wasn't present. I don't think his absence was such a profound loss as say Jackson when not with VDGG, but perhaps Man went from being superb to being just very good when Deke was absent.

That's a very fair assessment Chris
However, interestingly, there were only two albums released at the time that Deke didn't play on.
For me Martin Ace on bass and vocals played at least an equal amount of significance to the Man sound
Revelation - Deke Leonard
Man - Deke Leonard
Do You Like It Here Now, Are You Settling In? - Deke Leonard
Greasy Truckers Party (with other artists) - Deke Leonard
Live at the Padget Rooms - Deke Leonard
Be Good to Yourself at Least Once a Day
Back into the Future
Rhinos, Winos and Lunatics - Deke Leonard
Slow Motion - Deke Leonard
Maximum Darkness - Deke Leonard
The Welsh Connection - Deke Leonard
All's Well That Ends Well- Deke Leonard

Maximum Darkness (the extended release) is essential and contains all the old favourites

I love the Maximum Darkness album, although I do remember less than favourable reviews when released

Re: Man - their finest albums?
Part of the issue on its release was the 'quality' of Cipollina's contribution [he of Quicksilver Messenger Service] which allegedly Micky Jones had to overdub, as it was out of tune, before the album could be released. This is something between untrue and vastly exaggerated
The track selections are immense and the expanded remastered version is stunning methinks

Definitely (do you mean Man or Maximum Darkness?)
The latter: make sure you get the expanded remastered version
The former: perhaps start with Rinos, Winos and Lunatics

Re: Man - their finest albums?
One needs to check the remasters of all the Man albums re: extra material.
There is some excellent live stuff attached to many..
I played Back into the Future today which has 3 hours of material [3 CDs] including the full Roundhouse gig (of which I attended. Of course)
[Note the slightly different cover]
Same with the 2CD version of Rhinos, Winos - a bonus disc live from Whiskey a Go Go
oooooooooooof!

Re: Man - their finest albums?
On Nancy/Reap's recommendation I played "Be Good To Yourself At Least Once A Day" (expanded edition), it was great - some superb instrumental passages. I was listening to it on Youtube & it followed on with Revelation which was a bit hit and miss.

Approach the first four albums with caution.
Revelation was their debut from 1969 and influenced by the krautrock thing.(They lived in Germany for a while)
I wouldn't recommend the early albums to someone discovering the band
Back into the Future is well worth a listen - now expanded to three CDs
I am thinking of an impromptu Man listen this Sunday at 10pm (Maximum Darkness - do you fancy it JJ?)

I do really like "Do You Like It Here Now, Are You Settling In?", but in general I agree with C. When it comes to the pre- "Be Good...." albums, go in reverse chronological order. I also like the self-titled album just before "Do You....", but it could do with some editing. Before that, meh.....
As for the impromptu PSL, Kath and I are ready, willing, able and several other adjectives in favor of a Maximum Darkness PSL this Sunday.
Pontificating incorrigibly since birth.

Re: Man - their finest albums?
Despite owning some Man records in the past, I have never really got them. They are a sort of " Jam band" aren't they. I hear bits and pieces and think it sounds really good, but when I put an album on, it just doesn't work for me.
You can get all of the Man albums for almost nothing in the Original albums collection. Two volumes of 5 albums for a £15 each. I will need some convincing before investing...

Re: Man - their finest albums?
They were, generally, a better live band than studio.
Rhinos, Winos and Lunatics, a studio album, would be a good place to reappraise.
Many of the studio albums have been made doubly robust by live material that has been added.
Join us for the expanded version of the live album Maximum Darkness tomorrow, Sunday, at 10pm
