I don't know enough about JL and the Ono band to comment, to be honest!

I think it's generally assumed that Bowie was stripping back Space Oddity in preparation for Ashes to Ashes or as a bookend to the end of the decade. I've never read any comment by David about it (queue some bright spark who will post a link to that very subject :D ) But I think there is something in that idea. Personally I think it's a great version.
Of course if you want to hear a more overt tribute go no further than Bowie's cover of Mother.
... me? I've resisted the temptation. Working Class Hero is enough for me.

It sounds very much influenced by this approach.

The tick-tock drums, piano style, even some of the vocals ( 'one hundred thousand miles').

I've always felt Bowie thought about Lennon or admired him. Long before they worked together, there was the line ''Cause Lennon's on sale again' and he seems to embody some of Lennon's vocal sound and melodic style. The downward moving melodies in 'Space Oddity' at 'todaaay' and 'she knooows' seem related to the sort of thing JL did in 'Hold On John' ('john hold onnn', 'alriiight', etc.).

I used to think it was "there's lemons on sale again", which makes more sense than either!

Of course, "Five Years" uses much the same approach --

I had the oddest dream last night, and I suppose it is fitting that if I'm going to have a weird dream about anyone, it would be Bowie. And perhaps firstly one should know that I never remember dreams - i have probably remembered maybe a dozen or so dreams in my whole life - and that not only did I remember this one, but I remember it vividly, as if I could reach out and touch it.

I was in a Tokyo hotel, skyscraper, vague Lost in Translation vibe, sitting on my own until a faceless guy comes sitting next to me - oak furnishing, bar stools, woks, panoramic view of the nighttime skyline. And who is cooking for me in the open kitchen? David Bowie, hairstyle circa Reality-tour. And he is killing it in the kitchen - chopping furiously, delicately adding herbs here and there, and then presenting what looks like a chicken kiev(?) to the guy next to me. The guy tries to take a selfie of him, the chicken kiev, and bowie, but Bowie takes the phone and throws it in the wok. he looks at me menacingly, face getting a bit distorted like the Heathen front cover, comes face to face with me and says "Tell the Black Cat Bone I say hi." And that's it, dream gone.

So, erm, David says hi everyone. :?

Hello David.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

I saw Woody Woodmansy and Tony Visconti's Holy Holy show in Glasgow last night. Lots of love for Bowie, Ronson and Boulder from both band and audience.

Rick Wakeman plays some of his favourite contributions... including an alternate version of "Kooks" apparently...

Did anybody get that No Plan ep?
I did and it's good if just a little anticlimactic after Black Star
There's two new songs...final studio recordings or something...

I shelled out for the Lazarus soundtrack to get those songs. They're good, but let's face it, they didn't make the album.

A model of a David Bowie statue planned for the town where his Ziggy Stardust persona was first performed has been revealed.
