I did Bowie Backwards.'Tonight' review. No more Bowie.

Postby Minnie Cheddars » 09 Jan 2016, 14:33

The last Bowie album that I bought at the time of it's actual release - until yesterday - was Tonight. Aside from Loving the Alien and Blue Jean, I thought it was terrible. And then, I stopped buying new Bowie records. I heard them all, but some of them only once and I was pretty unimpressed with them. I had come to some kind of unofficial decision that for me, 'good' Bowie stopped at Let's Dance. That's way more generous than most people's assessments too.
Over the past few years I have been buying post - Tonight Bowie in dribs and drabs and I got a sizeable haul over Xmas. I listened to Blackstar for the first time yesterday which I liked a lot.
I'm going to use this thread as of next week to listen to all his studio albums from Blackstar backwards, until I get up to 'Tonight' again.
I've also decided that while I'm doing this, I'm not going to listen to any pre-Tonight Bowie albums. I don't think it's going to be fair to be giving Heathen a proper listen when Station to Station has been on the turntable before it. This may be my incentive to get through this project VERY QUICKLY.

I'd like to try and find my 'peace' with later Bowie really. If I can't, I'd like to think I have given it a good shot.

Blackstar next week then - I'll keep it all on this thread and change the title probably for each album.

See you then chaps!

I was reading some revisionist thing about 'Never Let Me Down' the other day, that it's actually pretty good. Haven't heard it myself.

The song of that name was great. The album less than great.

Am I the only one who, on reading the thread title, found a plethora of merry smut-based quips dancing upon his lips, yet managed to refrain from their utterance for fear of frightening the horses and upsetting The Authorities?

Correct.

As is "Tonight" I might add.

I have a friend who is the least discerning Bowie fan in the world. He has even bought all the picture disc singles, and gets everything that comes out with Bowie's name on it. And even he thinks Tonight and Never let me down are shit.
You don't like me...do you?

Though it is only available as a download, see if you can find Toy (it is also posted in its entirety on Youtube). There are a few tracks that ended up (rerecorded) on Heathen, but the remainder is mostly updates on Bowie chestnuts like "Conversation Piece" and "Shadow Man". It's really good.
But somehow when you smile, I can brave bad weather.

Let's get a schedule sorted for this.

Synch listens the lot.

Sync listen for his 25 Lps, one every two weeks.

2016 is BCB Bowie year.

Opening a glass of wine, then talking about Blackstar with my headphones on. Not a sync listen, just a train of thought really.

Lovely crackles and pops on my vinyl, give the opening track a much more antique feel than it should really have at this stage. Appropriate? Probably.
I thought I could separate the gloom of this record from the music, but it's not possible, so I'm just going to go with it, for fuck sake.

I love the off beat drum and bassy feel to this. And the strings. I'm a sucker for strings. One thing that is really noticeable is the sounds his mouth is making, maybe through weight loss, maybe a dry mouth. knowing what we know now, I'm thinking, is that sound because he was having chemotherapy?

Something about this song puts me in mind of Candidate / Sweet Thing. I honestly cannot substantiate that with anything. It just feels that way.
