Songs with tape speeding up/slowing down effect

Postby pcqgod » 04 Nov 2015, 17:52

I know there must be a bunch of these, but I'm having difficulty thinking of examples. There's the end of "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath, of course and this track by Revillos at the beginning. What others can you think of?

Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

There's a cool bit in the middle of the guitar solo, where a different take of the song comes in slow and comes up to speed, and then the solo continues. Happens at about 6:32 ...

Also, the opening track to 'Axis: Bold as Love' although it's not really a "song."

The beginning and end of "Stop This Train (Again Doing It)" by Kevin Ayers.

The recitation in "Number One Lowest Common Denominator" by Todd Rundgren.

The beginning of "Love Me Til The Sun Shines" by The Kinks (stereo mix only).

The end of "The Maelström" by Gillan (Ian).

Also on "The O-Men" from that album, as I recall.

One of my all-time favorite albums, The Parable Of Arable Land by The Red Crayola With The Familiar Ugly, is riddled with such effects, particularly (maybe only) in the stereo version. The stereo mix was made with two or three tapes running in parallel - not sure exactly how this was done, but there's all sorts of great headphone headphuck things happening.

On "Transparent Radiation" the two tapes gradually go out of sync with each other, until the third verse when things go seriously higgledy-piggledy:

"Pink Stainless Tail" starts off in mono, goes to wide stereo after the first verse (around 0:27 here), then there's more sync-screwing on and off for the rest of the song:

During the "freak out" section that "War Sucks" morphs into, there's a brilliant moment just past the three-and-a-half-minute mark where one of the tapes is abruptly switched to half speed. What sounds like a slightly out of tune piano is actually Mayo Thompson's twelve-string at half-speed. Another tape is cut to half-speed around 4:55, then brought back up, then down again, then up again.

I keep thinking of the the end of Black Sabbath's War Pigs but maybe they just play faster.

EDIT: already mentioned in OP. Doh!

Isn't that basically how you create a phasing effect? Two tapes of the same thing running slightly out of phase with each other?

Haven't listened to that album in a while. I'll have to put it on soon.

Original technique, I believe, has the engineer (or whoever) varying the tape's speed by pressing on the reel with his hand. That called it "flanging,"

I'm at lunch, but doesn't Montrose's Space Station #5 speed up at the end?

Yes indeed. You get different effects depending on how far apart the two are. Here is a link that helps explain the different effects: http://www.sonicscoop.com/2013/01/14/al ... VhsiI.dpbs
