Proggy tracks by non-Prog acts

Postby Charlie O. » 28 Jul 2015, 18:48

Inspired by reacquainting myself with this Seals & Crofts ditty from their Diamond Girl album - seven minutes long, suite-like structure, tricky instrumental passages, shifting time-signatures and modalities, mystical (I guess) lyrics... everything but capes.

What others?

Resist as long as you can, Adam, but you know it's only a matter of time before you let your prog flag fly...

How about this, from the new Nightwish album. A song about the evolution of life that's well over 20 minutes long, containing several sections and a guest narration from controversial biologist Professor Richard Dawkins. None more prog:

ZTT was always open about having a prog approach to pop music, and of course Trevor Horn was a member of Yes briefly. You could also cite the ten-minute Propaganda track Dream Within A Dream, but given that it features a guitar solo from Steve Howe, it's a moot point as to whether it counts in this thread.

Does this count? Couldn't think of someone much less proggy.

Always considered the third part to have Pete Murphy's best ever vocal performance, btw.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

The Damned dabbled in Prog occassionally such as on their epic Curtain Call and the very Floydish guitar solo on Under The Floor Again but I always thought this instrumental was their most Proggish moment:

And this instrumental from the Eagles which even has a very proggy title.

I was amazed when I bought the Eagl;es box set and played this ^^ for the first time

I don't think it sounds particularly proggy but it was, of course, the theme to Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy
Which is the sort of thing that people who like prog like.

I was going to include this in the Prog Cup. Maybe if I had, I would have reached the final
(not immediately proggy, give it a couple of minutes)

Check out those time signatures! Also the Floydish radio sounds at the start.
