Though this is rather good. I am sure everyone has seen it anyway, but...

First four albums still seem far and away the best from this lot.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

It's a good post - I can't imagine you writing that much about anything now!

It's the Talking Heads album for people who don't like Talking Heads.
What utter nonsense that last comment was. You should know better Jim!
Trying to reconcile the fact that I don't like the Heads but I do like that one!
As well as My Life in the Bush of Ghosts and The Catherine Wheel. These albums are essentially psychedelic, with the vocals and lyrics (when present) and attitude subservient to the hypnotic music. Less of the nerdy, intellectual playing with words and ideas thing.

Interestingly -- or perhaps not -- the vocal tracks are my least favorite on that album. I greatly prefer the cassette version with the greater ratio of instrumental tracks.

Re: BCB 130 - Talking Heads
I love it all. I think it was a “ last gasp” in a lot of ways. I know that sounds stupid since he’s pretty prolific. Maybe it was just the last gasp of what I REALLY liked about him. I think “his wife refused” (featuring A. Belew’s amazing “steel drum guitar”) is one of his very top tracks. I used to think it was about my parents. Now I think it’s about everybody’s parents.

Totally unsubstantiated comment: It seems that Byrne, and a lot of musicians, expand expand expand, then reconsider and contract. The Catherine Wheel was the widest, most expansive thing he did, and then he brought it back down to earth with Speaking in Tongues and beyond. To me as well, it was a last gasp.

I like "music for the knee plays" and things like that but it seems, like with the salsa stuff, the collaborators are setting the stage stylistically. maybe I wouldn't mind if I thought those projects justified their running times but I don't suppose I did.

Re: BCB 130 - Talking Heads
It's hard to define what is dabbling and what is justified eclecticism. The Catherine Wheel is so rich in terms of instrumentation and textures that I really didn't seem easy, whereas The Knee Plays, no matter how interesting and challenging it may have been, seems like one idea spread over a whole album. I liked a bit of that myself, but never ever have felt the urge to come back to it. It's dry toast whereas TCW is a spaghetti dinner.

I guess I like the words and ideas from that spaghetti dinner a lot more than you do. I think some of the lyrics are just fantastic.
the one that really sticks in my head from the Knee Plays is "in the Future". same deal plus I like how it contradicts itself. I think Byrne is brilliant when he does stuff like that.

Re: BCB 130 - Talking Heads
Initial question its I Zimbra (Hello Fripp)
I would put them in this order
*****
First side of Remain in Light
Fear of Music
Speaking in Tongues
Second side of Remain in Light
**** 1/2
More Songs About Buildings and Food
Talking Heads
****
Little Creatures
True Stories
***1/2
Naked
My brother was a staple on the CBGB scene in 75-77 so I heard them early on. However, didn't get them(although liked Psycho Killer) until More Songs About Buildings and Food with the Eno touch. MIssing their CBGB shows was one of the mistakes of my life. I saw Blondie and Patti Smith there but two years later I wished it was the Talking Heads. I caught them for the first time in the fall of 78 and was a super fan until Naked seeing them several times over those years. Heads were always a fun show live that was always expanding. I get the knock of many here about the sound was more forced starting with Remain in Light. STOP MAKING SENSE! See but I like a polished sound if done right and the heads did it right. Adding funk, belew's wild guitar accents and I thought the band were looser and more exciting.
Also liked them way pasted Fear of Music/Remain in Light era which was their best in the studio. However, their live show peaked for me in the 80-81. I'm also a fan of SIT and Little Creatures but they were a different band by then and maybe a bit too full of themselves. True stores also has its moments but admit I don't listen to any of that album now.
While I overplayed the heads in the 80's the were shelved in the 90's and now a few songs play of some of my playlists. HOwever, can get in a talking heads mood and basically shuffle the whole catalog.
As far as the band besides TH. I like the Tom Tom Club, JH's Walk on Water, The Catherine Wheel and My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. DOn;t reall get Byrne since then except a song or two.
