According to this website his net worth is 15 million. Not bad considering he was homeless and broke after the Stooges broke up in the mid 70's.

I would imagine the bulk of that money came from licensing his music to commercials.

It would not be surprising to find that that guy had spent 20 years feeling cheated out of his rightful place in rock history, and finally got to see that turn around in his last few years on the planet. Right the fuck on.

Yes, absolutely!

I don't care if he's done adverts to make some cash. You can't begrudge the guy cashing in so he's got a comfortable retirement. The fucker was due something.

He's probably the only living rocker I'd like to meet. Just to shake his hand.

Again, not much I can add to what's been said here, or down through the years, which is plenty.

As is often the case with bands like this, I think their uniqueness is generally overstated and the degree to which they are, at heart, a traditional blues-based rock band, is understated. In fact I'll take it a step farther and say Iggy (who supposedly was close friends with, and stayed at the home of, Muddy Waters/Howlin' Wolf/Butterfield Band drummer Sam Lay before the Stooges formed) internalized the heart of the blues more than just about any other rock star. As such my favorite songs by them are ones that have that flavor. Think of "Down On the Street," for example. Is it punk rock? Or traditional blues? Don't know about you, but my answer is...YES!!

They're certainly better at it than a lot of bands like Canned Heat who are far better players - that's mainly 'cause, though he's a pretty smart guy, Iggy never intellectualized the music, or (worse) thought to preserve it. In that, I think he goes deeper into the heart of the blues than anyone who apes the sound, even expertly.

Best song - Down in the Street

Best album - The first three are all great, but it's Funhouse all day and twice on Saturday.

None of their albums are underrated. The new stuff's overrated, though. (Put your shirt on, Iggy. It's time.) (Surprisingly, at least to me, David Johansen and the Dolls caught on more quickly than Iggy that the heart of what they do is ageless, and that you don't have to pretend to be 25 to keep doing it.)

I think I'm going off the band a bit.

Yeah, i was sadly underwhelmed i've got to admit. Maybe because it felt way too 'scholarly' in a way to me, a look back at history and the Stooges as legends, rather than a deeper more vital look at the music and how it was created.

What happened?

I was at a Jon Spenser Blues Explosion show, leaning on the bar, thinking about how they really would sound better with a bass player, when I noticed that Iggy Pop was leaning on the bar next to me, so I said to him "Do you think these guys could use a bass player?" Or something like that. I don't know if he thought I was trying to ask him for something, or it was the fact that I just didn't get The Jon Spenser Blues Explosion, but he sort of wrinkled his nose and excused himself.

Oh well!

He saw my band another time; that probably counts as me making a fool of myself in front of him too.
