Here's where McCartney wins the solo 70s by a knockout punch and back on top of the world:

You know...this album meant a ton to me back in the day. As I said, I went to one of the shows on this tour - so this was pretty personal for me. I don't know that I'd cite it as a benchmark of any kind though. The song selection is pretty uneven.

The version of "Maybe I'm Amazed" on this however, is worth all the hyperbole you can heap on it.

Sneelock's A-Number One Underrated Ex-Beatle track: "Early 1970 by Ringo Starr"
Ringo wanted the Beatles to get back together even more than I did.

Not for me: if anything, Wings Over America shows how well Paul's solo songs stood up to his Beatle selections. Perhaps the quality tails off a little towards the end of side 6, but overall, it's an incredibly strong album.

My favorite (and I mean absolute favorite) thing about this record/tour/film/etc. is his voice. He's at an odd point for a 33/34 year old man - it no longer sounds like "Long Tall Sally", perhaps, but he has this amazing throaty, almost sort of shredded kind of top end in the upper registers that sounds fucking amazing. It's there on the version of "Maybe I'm Amazed", it's there on "Call Me Back Again", on "Beware My Love" and several others of the era/set. It's "Wings/stadium Paul" at its best/most high octane, and a really unique and wonderful period for his main instrument. He brings it back periodically ("So Glad To See You", "With A Little Luck", "Coming Up", "The Pound Is Sinking") before it matures completely out of his voice.

Cross-posting this. It was already one of my favorite scenes in the movie, but I didn't know the thought behind it was so expanded. Thoughts?

I like a hell of a lot of solo Beatles material, so in that respect, I agree with the guy that it's good to collect this stuff, but the "liner notes" that Hawke writes to his kid are so thoughtful, I can't really deal with it. I don't really dig the idea that he is handing this stuff down to his girl as a gift. Let the kid decide which songs she likes for herself.

Not as important on the movie thread as here, but I should point out that, while the idea does come from Hawke, these liner notes are written in character. In terms of his character, it makes perfect sense. It's self-indulgent as hell, but it's a great addition to the movie.

I'm also interested to know what people think of his choices (don't know to what degree they're Hawke's, and what degree his character's, and what changed), but also what they think of the ideas he raised, as well as if it improves the songs any to sequence them the way he did.

I love his line about "you are the music." I think it's very loving and very self-centered at the same time.
