It's a disco album, what do you want?

It's not even, really . It didn't keep my full attention, but it seemed to be mostly soppy ballads and run-of-the-mill AOR pop.

It's certainly not as good as Main Course or even Children of the World.

I heard Spirits Having Flown for the first time recently.

It's pretty dismal, apart from the closing track. Any defenders?

I like the three big singles a lot, but you can kind of tell that Barry had spread himself pretty thin as a writer by then (I feel like the top 50 non Bee Gees records of 1978 were all written by him). He himself has an affection of the title track (even did in concert when we saw him several years ago), but I find the record pretty "lite" overall (and I'm a huge fan of mid-late 70s Bee Gees/related).

And yet, Guilty by Barbara Streisand (1980)...a Bee Gees album in all but name - a stone cold classic in my book. Barry's final masterpiece.

This may be the most Googa-esque thing I have ever allowed myself to type.

Yeah - there's a certain kind of "sound" those guys could make (the Gibb-Galuten-Richardson production team..."the Miami ABBA?") that just kind of evokes a super kick ass car stereo set to stun ("Grease", "I Just Want To Be Your Everything", "Tragedy", "If I Can't Have You", etc....). Something like this:





...they've already won me over before the featured performer makes her first appearance.

If you buy the premise that the Bee Gees and co. could bullishly and determinedly make something of the likes of Samantha Sang and Andy Gibb (God bless him, but...barely a guest on his own records) by the sheer force of their late 70s hitmaking mojo, you can imagine the "Oh, shit - we've finally got a real fucking vocalist here!" enthusiasm with which they apparently tackled this project.

Sometime in just the last three days I heard an unknown '60s American garage band attempt this, of all things. Brave or foolish? Both. (I honestly can't even remember now what CD I was playing.)





As with so many Gibb songs of that era, I have no idea what it's "about"... but it never fails to move me.
