Bloody hell.

Not that I ever went, mind. But she had quite a bit of his old vinyl in Whitehaven. I remember seeing Freak Out! for the first time.

He's one of those acts - love him, know he's great, but...it is baffling how infrequently I play his music. There's something irrationally off-putting about his reputation for inconsistency. But...yeah, the Tim Buckley, Happy Sad, Goodbye and Hello period is kind of wonderful.

I looked for this song when I bought his first two albums, and couldn't find it--It ended up on an album from two years after the clip was filmed, and yes he did it better than This Mortal Coil so fuck all y'all. I couldn't understand why those albums resonated with me so much until I started getting heavily into jazz, and began to see him as a "new thing" jazz singer ala Leon Thomas. He had a lot more in common with someone like Thomas, than the folk scene he was lumped in with. I remember him being lumped in with Jackson Browne. Yes, both were from Orange County, both about the same age, both pretty boys, and were probably good friends and toured the same circuits, but they were as alike musically as Television and the Dead Boys. I loved Lorca the first time I heard it--it was like a rock version of late Coltrane.

Not even remotely a fan of Jeff's though.

I used to be a huge fan. I don't listen very often nowadays, but he still impresses me whenever- and to whichever album barring the last- I listen. I think his career fits very neatly into three periods, each with a trio of albums.

Early 'folkie' stuff:

The eclectic, experimental stuff:

Whenever the TIm/Jeff comparisons come, I remind people that TIm didn't live as long, and made a lot more music. And it was better. And I like Jeff more than most here, but there's no comparison. TIm was a better singer, a better songwriter, and had a secret weapon in guitarist Lee Underwood, who made all the changes with him.

Most underrated album - Greetings From LA - A celebration of sex as unrestrained as anything by Marvin Gaye, it also contains some of his best singing.

Yes - I discovered those albums at roughly the same time and I could definitely see a connection between them: a kind of pastoral jazz-folk. I've loved what all that evokes ever since.

Well this is yet another artist in this new series of threads that I've been curious about. I may have to go out today and buy
an album or two, load the pipe and immerse myself in his music. I have passed over his music so many times in my lifetime. I'm having a hard time remembering any friends who listened to Tim. I recall seeing the albums in collections on a few occasions but never knowingly heard any of his music. Keep it coming.
