Re: Frank Zappa vs. Sly Stone
I can enjoy Zappa in short bursts. A few years ago I was out to lunch and “I’m The Slime” came on - and it sounded perfect in the moment.
But those moments are far and few between. I saw him in concert twice and bought and played at least 20 of his albums in my first ten years or so of delving heavily into music. Ultimately it just didn’t move me.
But if you are trying to give him a shot Moddie, start with the first three Mothers albums, then perhaps Cruisin’ with Ruben & the Jets (if only to contextualize him a bit) - then skip to Hot Rats. If you don’t get him after all of that - you don’t get him.

Just listen to ‘Peaches En Regalia’. It’s wonderful.

Absolutely. Probably his single greatest track.

Just listened to it. Blimey, if that's his best track then the rest is going to be some kind of ordeal. It sounded like some ill-judged attempt at world music, vaguely Chinese and Medieval bits thrown together with no real effect. And some truly horrible sounding keyboards and synths. It sounded like ELP at their worst.

Yeah - that proggy keyboard bit in the middle always makes me grit my teeth.
I like the melody. The arrangement is a bit busy for me, but it’s by far the best thing Zappa has to offer. Based on your reaction - you might take heed.

This’ll help.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

It isn't. It's part of what turned me off him. Try these, which possess the supreme non-prog virtue of brevity (and also tunes and silly voices):

If G likes fusion, he should try Waka Jawaka or The Grand Wazoo. Listen to the title tracks of both albums on youtube. No vocals on either one.

Re: Frank Zappa vs. Sly Stone
Zappa by miles.
Zappa made music all over the rock spectrum and did a great job of recruiting amazing musicians and/or discovering them. His experimental music opened lots of ideas and when he wanted to put out a popper album he was able to do this also.
Sly Stone was an amazing pop and funk guy. ig influence on the funk of the 70's. HIs R&B rhythms and melodies blended R&B, motown with rock and psychedelia. However, in the end I prefer Zappa's music and style to Sly.
