Rapid Eye Movement 003

This is tying with Current 93's The Light is Leaving Us All as my favourite release of the year. It's a compilation of five absolutely massive techno tunes from various artists on the Rapid Eye Movement label, four of them Basic Channel-type exercises in dubby hypnotism but with even more noisy layers on top and beats straight out of the Surgeon-school of industrial and one of them the same thing minus the 4/4 kick drums so it's essentially a highly textured ambient track. It's not for everyone but it hits my spot and then some, especially VII Circle's “Eternal” which sounds like a mashup between British Murder Boys and Tim Hecker and it fucking rules.

Skee Mask - Compro

This is #2 on Bleep's top 10 albums of the year, Bleep being the online record shop started by Warp Records that now distributes tonnes of music from many other indie labels. Is it any wonder they like this? It's basically a love letter to 90s Warp artists. This kind of thing wouldn't have sounded out of place on the Artificial Intelligence comps. It may be derivative as anything but its lack of originality is only matched by how satisfying it really is.

Giving that a listen on soundcloud now. Doesn't entirely sound my kind of thing, but the cover image reminds me of Joy Division's Atmostphere 12" shot of trees in Hebden Bridge, so it earns a listen on that basis.

The Kas:st track was the stand-out for me. Lovely little floaty thing.

Yeah it's a winner this compilation. Note that the other volumes are not actually more African psych-funk but are other records that Luaka Bop considered "World Psychedelic Classics" (with their use of "psychedelic" being a very general one), so Os Mutantes, Shuggie Otis, Tim Maia, William Onyeabor etc.

That's how I felt at first. I actually hated it but for some reason I kept playing one or two songs from it over and over and then one day I just thought it was great.I find it rhythmically interesting and creative but I do understand you need a high tolerance for repetition of annoying noises.
