Album of the year, according to The Wire. Must be the first time they've given it to a jazz record since it stopped being a jazz mag.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Worthy contender too, it's really something special imo. Third on my list right after Aviary and Dhorimviskha.

Yeah, I'm surprised by it. I kind of expected it to be much more out-there and borderline unlistenable, but it's actually really warm and packed full of tunes. Great use of tuba, which you don't hear that often.

I like the cover and the fact that Lee Hazelwood is involved has me interested. As a small fan of his and of 60s girl groups will I like this?
If you like pretty female harmonies and 60's girl group sound, I don't see how you could not enjoy it.

I like it. Reminds me of The Comet Is Coming but with vocals and rapping.

I just found out that Shabaka Hutchings (how cool is that name?) is the sax player in both bands.
I also see Sebastian Rochford from Acoustic Ladyland and Polar Bear is also a drummer in Sons of Kemet.

Minimal techno type thing. I prefer his more field-recording/ambient stuff, but this is pretty good for a debut.

Ended up on this one via a circuitous youtube route. Christoph De Babalon's 1997 darkly ambient / drum n' bass opus If You're Into It, I'm Out of It seems to be garnering a lot of attention via this year's re-release. And it is ace. So I followed links to other things that CDB has done, and he's a member of this lot. Skittering drum n' bass breakcore thing with chunky guitar.

more funk bands need bass clarinet
dusty groove wrote:Some of the tightest funky 70s jamming ever – a lost gem from Ray & His Musical Court, a group that perfectly fuses JB/Horny Horns funk with beat-heavy Afro-Cuban groove! Ray and the group are one of the more obscure funky combos of the era, and it's a damn shame, because the group's tight-as-can-be amalgam of JB's style horn riffing and thumping Afro-Cuban percussion is some of the absolute best of its kind. This group seriously smokes any of the current funk bands on the road! On these sessions Ray wrote, produced, played "organ flute" and provided some vocals in a large group that includes three trumpets, bass clarinet, sax, two drummers, congas, electric bass, and a line of mostly Spanish vocalists. Amazing 70s super funk with a very proud Latin edge – and featuring tracks that include "Sunny", "Soul Freedom", "Cookie Crumbs", "De Eso Nada Monada", "Lo Sabia", "Venimos Acabando", "La Pena", and "La Senorita Lola".
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Tonight I'm pretending it's a typical Friday night 30 years ago, and I'm playing my favorite albums for psychic healing after a long school week. At that time it would have been l.p. records recorded on cassette, played on a tiny but adequate boombox.
