Freddie & The Dreamers is the one British Invasion band that no one will admit to liking now, for they are considered to be a total embarrassment. And yet their "Nightcap" album is going for big bucks as a CD reissue, and when you sit down and have an unguarded listen to a career comp, all sorts of surprises leap out of the speakers. Take for instance a B-side from '66, "Short Shorts", which was a cover of a song by Royal Teens. It is the Dreamers at their zaniest, most out there. Just completely idiotic, and yet you cannot help but warm to it in all its tautological glory, relish that cretinous, falsetto-like call-and-response: "Who's real crazy?" No wonder it became a concert staple for them.
