I have actually had the thought "I hate this more than any other music in the world."
The original is of course wonderful. Cake just sound so put-upon, and you know that guy is a total douche. Emo wussies. Rites of Spring make fun of people like them.
I have a memory from one long ago summer when my bandmates and I retired to a neighborhood bar after a particularly spirited rehearsal. We had the run of the place, the youngish barmaid had the music cranked, and the atmosphere was warm and celebratory.
Well, I don't have to tell you what song eventually popped up on her iPod/mix CD/personal vessel of jams. The three of us just sort of exchanged deflated, "who farted?", distressed, defeated and annoyed grimaces. As if on cue, she turned to the three of us, beaming and declared "Okay, this is pretty much the best. cover. ever.!" (people already talked like that). The experience had turned a corner, and we were quick to end the party - all the way home contemplating where this particular interpretation lived in relation to the likes of "All Along the Watchtower", "Twist and Shout", etc.
