"Dear God, they're covering another girl group song. Why can't they leave well enough alone!?" - Sniffy Beatlefan, 1964
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Boooooo!
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

When the answer is "It's exactly what I would have expected you to have done you fucking twat".
These guys also give perfectly servicable "self-satisfied, sneering ennui".

The original is of course wonderful. Cake just sound so put-upon, and you know that guy is a total douche. Emo wussies. Rites of Spring make fun of people like them.

To paraphrase Robert Runcie, wank.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

That would be a good thread idea in itself.

I have a memory from one long ago summer when my bandmates and I retired to a neighborhood bar after a particularly spirited rehearsal. We had the run of the place, the youngish barmaid had the music cranked, and the atmosphere was warm and celebratory.
Well, I don't have to tell you what song eventually popped up on her iPod/mix CD/personal vessel of jams. The three of us just sort of exchanged deflated, "who farted?", distressed, defeated and annoyed grimaces. As if on cue, she turned to the three of us, beaming and declared "Okay, this is pretty much the best. cover. ever.!" (people already talked like that). The experience had turned a corner, and we were quick to end the party - all the way home contemplating where this particular interpretation lived in relation to the likes of "All Along the Watchtower", "Twist and Shout", etc.

Talk about music snobs. She was a youngish barmaid. Have fun!

Hey man, at least she had it cranked. No half measures in emo.
I remember a coworker of mine really wanting to play this album when we were doing some menial labor project in a conference room, stuffing binders for a big meeting or something, and had music playing. I pretended I didn't hear him at first. Eventually I had to take a really long trip to the bathroom to avoid this song.

Well that's all I'm going to be hearing now when it comes on.
But considering I also prefer the Mandy Moore version I guess it's no big loss.

Re: 'What's Up?' and the very worst songs ever
I do quite like a few of the ones slated here perhaps unsurprisingly. I've been a Cake fan since, ironically, " I Will Survive", I can see why they're not liked but I like em. Frente too. I like quite a lot of Angie Hart stuff, "Less Than Zero", her first song as Splendid when she was married to/recording music with Jesse Tobias.

An ex punk covering The Velvets isn't the same thing though.

I don't know if you're young-ish or barmaid-ish enough to get away with that.

Taylor Swift has released a "stripped-down, banjo-slathered rendition of the soul classic" 'September', by Earth, Wind and Fire.
Can't find any YouTube vids that actually work, but there's a link to Spotify in this Spin piece:
