I'll try again one day...I am a fan of the polyrhythms.

There are a couple of parts that sound exactly like that! But there is also a lot of relatively heavy, intense stuff.

I liked that. Not keen on the music box bits though but the melody is nice.

My mistake, I meant the bits after the 'verse'.

I think I'll download the album based on that. It's actually pretty cool.

I may regret this.

I saw them a few times in the mid to late 70's. That's as good as my memory gets, C.

There are actually some golden moments in their catalogue. There'll definitely be something there for you, but as soon as you hear it, the next minute you'll want to pull all your fingernails off. They're that kind of band.

Go for Octopus or Acquiring The Taste, and be prepared to do a lot of fast-forwarding...

Surely you are not that old Rita...?

The Glass House tour was memorable - watching the mighty Giant blow Deep Purple off stage was a pure joy [Tommy Bolin was crap]

They'd be great used as evidence if you were against the motion 'ambition in art is a good thing', put it that way.

I thought that when listening to Proclamation. Just when you think "this is good", they go and fart in your face.

We shall see.

In a way, this tendency makes them sound more modern than bands like Yes, Genesis, and so on, who had somewhat more romantic notions of music, with sweeping melodies and epic song lengths. GG generally kept to the shorter (by prog standards) song lengths of 5 to 6 minutes, rather than 12 to 18, and shifted gears as quickly as someone cutting and pasting with their recording software.

I think they're much more interesting than Yes or Genesis, partly for those reasons. They were insanely ambitious, often more so than the song needed - altho' I suppose we can't really use words like 'need' when it comes to the arts!

Six years after this thread was last updated...

There is a lengthy and informative article on the band in the current edition of Prog:

Image

You can also access the magazine cheaper in a digital version here:

https://gb.readly.com/

https://teamrock.com/plus/buy-now

(make sure you have the required software if you sign up to the teamrock one, they favour Apple and Android)

I listened to parts of Playing The Fool and Three Friends while reading the article.

An enlightening read. VERY GOOD DEAL.

I do have since I first heard them and confirmed on 11/5/77 NYC Palladium. After a summer and fall of big venue shows we saw GG 3rd row center and was blown away. Just started learning how to play the bass and have always loved the disjoined time signatures and bizarre vocals. At the time I didn't consider them like Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, etc they had a small fan base and when I saw them at the Palladium it was an adience of a bunch of jazz fans and other rock musicians. Always found the arrangements to be brilliant and their live show saw them two more times in the 70's. 2 thru 7th album all are great.

Got a chance to see Three Friends in 2009 at NEARfest

Great stuff!

Three Friends are ace - I've seen them thrice once when kerry was briefly in the band.

Gary is still a very good guiatarist (great photo too)
