I think they are 6 great bands, but The Stooges don't belong in that company, nor The Fall (although a better argument could be made for them I think).
Of course, I was mostly stoned at the time.

I'd like to hear each of them do a cover of Whole Lotta Love and make my choice then.

I don't know if all of them would be my six but I wouldn't stop you from claiming that.

There's at least two of mine in there, and I am not sure it isn't churlish not to admit one or two of the others to my top half-dozen. There is only one outside my top twenty, and that is becuase I don't know them as well as I might.

Beter than Carlsson's list, at any rate - I would certainly be letting you know had it been the other way round.

three in that list, versus two in Carlssons. Can I have ten bands in my top six?

My ranking criteria:

Can - Three Whole Lotta Love guitar solos
The Velvet Underground - Three and a Half Whole Lotta Love guitar solos
The Fall - Two and a Half Whole Lotta Love guitar solos
The Stooges - One Robert Plant orgasm and Four and a Half Whole Lotta Love guitar solos
Roxy Music - One and a Half Whole Lotta Love guitar solos
Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band - Half a Robert Plant orgasm and two Whole Lotta Love guitar solos
Don't fake the funk on a nasty dunk!

Yeah, I'm to seven, myself.

I chose all those except the Stooges, who I love. The evidence for their inclusion is a bit scant compared to the others.

Two out of six, about the same as Carlsson.

The Velvets because they are

The Stooges because they were one of the best bands I've ever seen live.

Roxy Music and The Fall are not even in the top division.

Only the VU would make my top 20.

The Velvets are 'objectively' the best, but they're not the most original. Beefheart or Can would run away with that honour.

The Fall are my favourites and they reach a spot no-other band can. But both The Stooges' and Roxy's debut albums are better than anything else produced by the others - the incredible Trout Mask Replica aside.

I don't know about The Fall so much, but the others all put out incredible debuts.
