I couldn't narrow it down to one. I've always favoured the Brit bands, so it's really difficult to pick between Zeppelin, Roxy Music, The Stones, The Who......or JT even.

Mostly lightweights and phonies mentioned so far. No mention of The Faces? Heads Hands and Feet? Man? Fotheringay? Colloseum? Uriah Heep? Nazareth? The Strawbs, E.L.P.? Procol Harum? Wishbone Ash? Jethro Tull? E.L.O.? Deep Purple? Queen? Even Bad Co?

You're a bunch of Punks reliving your youth, and those who aren't are fashion victims; mostly. ;)

I like the 'even' before Bad Co - like all the other nominations are more worthy!

They are. I still think Bad Co's debut is the best ever debut, only because the double album (American Import) version of H.H.&F.'s debut doesn't quite hold the attention. The single album version might, but I haven't heard it.

It's probably Zeppelin, but no mentions for...

Dr. Feelgood
Steeleye Span
Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance

...is just wrong.

The mid seventies was a bit empty for great bands on both sides of the atlantic.
What you have are a number of bands who are just okay.

Actually, my pick for best band would be either The Who or ELP. Procol Harum lost me a bit in the 70's, though back in the 60's they were utterly superb. Jethro Tull is also great, but not the best, as are Deep Purple. The rest are either fine or I don't rate at all. Uriah Heep in particular is just shite.

And how on Earth is Throbbing Gristle lightweight and/or a bunch of phonies? :x

My pick would be Pink floyd but it's hard to argue against Led Zeppelin

Why do we have to keep doing these stupid things, when you know it was the Faces?

I'm not familiar with Throbbing Gristle, I have a vague memory of thrashing Punk, but only very vague.

I've just checked United on Youtube, and it's unmitigated shite.

Yes but what about bands whose genesis was not in the 60s. Roxy Music must be the topper.

They'd have been world class if they'd had a decent singer. As it stands - lump them in with other, clothes horse, fronted bands.

I don't mind that.
It's not brilliant but there's something going on there.

Of course it can't compare to the absolute beacon of originality that is Fotheringay

Waste of time?

They were your Velvet Underground. Not one bad album, enormously influential and groundbreaking. I can understand Joe not caring for them but you ought to know better. Maybe TG were a little too harsh for you?

It's just crap. Why should I make the effort to explain why I think that? They're not deserving.

And they aren't fit to even dream of the Velvet Underground.
