best British band of the 70s

And a fantastic live band, as well.

Er, well, forget Tormato, but the tour for that album more than made up for the disappointment.

And as a live band throughout the 1970s, Yes were as good as anyone, and better than most.

Slade are certainly in the running for best British pop group of the 70s.
They made two 4 star albums (Old New Borrowed and Blue and Flame) and a couple of 3s (Play It Loud and Slayed?).
The rest is not so great
They were a phenomenon as a singles act - probably unmatched until The Jam at the end of the decade.
But they were not really an albums band

In fact, I think the UK edition of Sladest is by far their best LP listen. And the US version is also a fine alternative.

I am a little more enthusiastic about them as an album band also - "Play It Loud", "Flame", and "Old New Borrowed and Blue" are uniformly excellent, and "Sladest" is so much more than a comp, as it contains some singles-only releases.

Yes Steve, 'over' longevity can be an issue.

Sadly, for me, Tull should have split when Martin left - at the latest!

We mustn't be too harsh on some bands that just can't let go.

For me TD and Gong are two such examples - up to a point they were brilliant....

King Crimson is another - seminal up to Red

So, my point? I'm not sure, other than perhaps we should consider a bands whole career particularly when it shows a marked decline
